Northern Soul

Steely Interiors

My move to the North East was a sudden one. After months of applications a really good job came up - in Newcastle. So I’ve just moved into this nice big flat. The price was great compared to my flat down south. I want to do its size some justice. Deck the place out. Go grown up. I really like that rustic yet industrial feel: big wooden benches with metal legs for the dining area, a vintage steel desk for my computer. A cool and contemporary abode. Inspired by the steel industry of North East England.

Unexpected spring sunshine pours through the space between the curtains. Thoughts turn to the beach. Desert this city life – the weekend is here. Hit the beach. The sky is a pleasing vivid blue. In an hour Brighton will be yours. The fluorescent coloured beach huts are unmistakable. Hear the noise of the promenade and children excitedly spending their pocket money on the arcades. The cool sea swishes about your feet – you’ve arrived.

Let the ever popular lemon pancake topping inspire your interior choices. Bright yellows look exceptionally good in the living spaces of your home, pick out some key kitchen equipment in the sunny hue for a modern and unexpected pop of colour. Don’t forget, too much lemon can be sour, so keep your rooms balanced with crisp white ceramics and neutral contemporary furniture.

Summer birthdays are the best! This year we're going to celebrate them in style with a seaside themed party. It'll be all fish, water, bright summer colours and finding nemo. Birthday parties are a chance to throw ideas around and colours everywhere. I love the idea of having sandcastle buckets as party bags and getting some HUGE beach balls to play pass the parcel type games with. Who doesn't love a summe party?!

Her hair is ultra-glossy. Primed to perfection – she is smart, effortless and ethically conscious. Stella McCartney is her uniform of choice. She loves how the tailoring teeters between tough masculinity and a sensual femininity. Comfort with an edge is her mantra. She exudes an undeniable cool. Gliding through the city landscape in statement footwear. You want to be just like her – don’t even deny it.

From his humble Nottingham roots in a tiny shop, Sir Paul Smith went on to change the world of fashion with his trademark 'classics with a twist' style. I am Barbour

Can’t beat a classic

I grew up in the countryside on my parents’ farm in Norfolk before I moved down to London. I live south of the river, Clapham to be exact. I love Barbour. I’m not really one for trends. I like the classics: a good pair of jeans, tortoiseshell Wayfarers, reliable brown boots for a walk across the common and of course - my Barbour. I actually own four Barbour jackets: two quilted, for those warm spring days and my trusty wax duo, one classic, the other a pea coat style. I don’t know what I’d wear without them.

Clever Kettle

I need cups of tea. Every moment. Every second. I think about a brew. They have to come steadily and consistently throughout the day. The moment I open my eyes, I want a sweet hot cup. Could you imagine making one without the speed and efficiency of an automatic kettle? Mine’s a Russell Hobbs – I fill it up to the top with water. Set it down. Flick the switch. Hear the bubbles steadily boil up. A few minutes pass. The switch flicks off. It’s teatime again.

Mine’s a Dyson

The modern home’s must-haves

Diane Smith from next door has one. I saw her using it when vacuuming the inside of her nifty little Mini Cooper. They are the absolute best though, those Dysons. No bag. No fuss. James Dyson is an absolute a genius. Some of them look like they belong in 3014! The ones with the cylinder ball makes it easier to get into corners apparently - that would mean I could chuck out that ancient dustpan and brush. I might invest in one yet.

This small isle has spawned many a great invention, from Alexander Graham Bell's ubiquitous telephone to Peter Hobb's kettle here's a selection of what's made Britain great in the world of inventions.
