About 50 Shades of Grey
50 Shades of Grey is an extremely popular book series written by the British author E.L James. Described as an erotic romance novel, 50 Shades (as it's sometimes colloquially referred to), is mainly aimed at a female audience. Since its release in 2010, the first book has become the best-selling of all time for Britain - it beat the Harry Potter series, by selling 5.3 million units. Despite critical reception not being completely positive, with most large newspaper outlets and reviewers claiming the writing to be poor or worse, word of mouth travelled incredibly quickly, and the book became a smash hit amongst the readership. Two sequels have been released, one titled 50 Shades Darker, and the next called 50 Shades Freed.
The books followed Anastasia Steele as she meets the powerful businessman, Christian Grey. It is well-known for its explicit content and erotic scenes that are depicted in graphic detail. Sexual themes spread throughout the book, which were criticised and discussed by many - this helped the book grow in popularity and made sure that everyone had at least heard about it. The books have now sold over 90 million copies worldwide, and it has been translated in to more than 50 languages.
The book can be bought as a complete set, with all three novels in the series, or they can be bought individually. Usually a good deal can be found with used copies of all three found frequently on online market places. But it's not just the book that is for sale, with 50 Shades-themed merchandise available for purchase. Some items include 50 Shades-themed jewellery, trinkets and Mr Grey bookmarks.
