About Alexandra Burke

When your mother is the world-famous Melissa Bell from Soul II Soul, there's really only one thing you can do with your life: sing! And sing she can and does. Born in Islington, London on August 25, 1988, Alexandra Burke boasts African, Dougla, Jamaican, and Irish ancestry. She has three other brothers and sisters, namely Sheneice, David, and Aaron. She admits that as a youngster, she had to grow up pretty fast, what with her mother always being on tour, or busy recording, and often looked after her siblings after her parents broke up in 1992. Alexandra auditioned for the second series of 'The X-Factor' in 2005, and made it through to the last few contestants, but wasn't chosen to be winner as the judges felt she was still too young. Undeterred, she enrolled in professional singing lessons for three years. She was going to be a pop star or nothing! In 2008, she auditioned again, and after a long series, went on to finally win, and in the process scored a UK number one hit with 'Hallelujah', originally penned by Leonard Cohen in 1984. Since that time, she has appeared as a guest judge on 'The X-Factor'. In 2009, her debut album, 'Overcome', was released to high praise from the music press. The first single to be released from this album, called 'Bad Boys', went straight to number one, and on the 7th of January 2010 was officially classified as platinum by the British Phonographic Industry. The subsequent release of Alexandra Burke's second album, 'Heartbreak On Hold', again to great critical acclaim. As well as being a true pop star, Alexandra has a heart of gold, and has raised millions of pounds for various charities, from organ donations to 'Help For Heroes', the armed forces charity.
