A special trailer, a home on wheels, a caravan lets you explore the open road in comfort and ease. Hooking on behind a car, with bedding and bath, kitchen and lights, a caravan travels with you as a home away from home.

Some caravans come with motors attached and others are trailers that switch from one car to another at will. They are great for people who want to travel in comfort. Conquer the country roads in a caravan.

About Caravan

Caravanning has long been a favourite British pastime, so it's no wonder that the UK caravan manufacturing industry is worth an estimated£650 million per year, according to the National Caravan Council. Caravans range from large static caravans to tiny two berth touring caravans with no inside toilet. Modern touring designs use lightweight construction and streamlining to make them easier to tow. Caravanning as a leisure pursuit was first popularised by Dr William Gordon Stables who had the world's first leisure caravan built in 1880. He wrote a book about his experiences called "The Gentleman Gypsy" and soon camping and caravan clubs were being set up by people who wanted to follow his example. With the increasing popularity and affordability of the motor car during the 1920s and 1930s caravans went from being horse drawn to mainly being towed by motor vehicles. The design of caravans has steadily advanced over the decades with modern conveniences like electricity, gas and toilets being added. At the same time caravan sites have been continually upgraded to serve the new models with electrical connections and the like. At present, the Caravan Club administers over 200 caravan sites and more than 2500 certified locations where any of the club's almost a million members can pitch up. For caravans made after 1992 a Caravan Registration and Identification Scheme (CRiS) number will be printed on the window. This is an excellent way to check the age of the vehicle as well as if it has been reported stolen. Without a CRiS number you will need to locate the vehicle's chassis number to acquire the same information.
