About England Football
Controlled by the FA, the England football team is one of two joint oldest international football teams in the world (the other being Scotland). Both of these teams played against one another in the first ever international game, held in 1872. The team has had mixed levels of success over the years, and have only won the world cup once, in 1966. They hosted the final where they beat Germany 4-2 in extra time. Since then, the closest they got to victory was when they reached the semi-final in 1990. Considered the home of football, English people are very proud of their team, and support them wholeheartedly every time a competition comes around.
The first ever England team captain was Billy Wright, who captained the national team from 1946 to 1959. Some other notable captains include Bobby Moore from 1962 to 1973, who, during his captaincy helped the English team win the 1966 World Cup, and David Beckham, who was captain between 2001 and 2009.
