About Fireman Sam

This animated TV show has captured the imaginations of children across the United Kingdom. "Fireman Sam" takes place in a fictitious Welsh town called Pontypandy. The show was created by Dave Gingell and Dave Jones who had previously served as firemen in Kent. Co-creator Rob Lee helped them to develop it into an animated series which first premiered in 1985 in Welsh on S4C. In 1987, the show was broadcast across the United Kingdom on BBC1 and the initial run ran through 1984. The series was nominated for a Best Short Animated Film at the BAFTA TV Award show in 1988. A stage production called "Fireman Sam In Action" was created in 1996, which was adapted into a feature film and released on video. In 2008, a second run of the show commenced with a new cast of characters alongside Sam, which is still being broadcast as of 2013. In the new version, the village is a seaside fishing village and some of Sam's relatives run a fish and chips cafe called The Whole Fish Cafe. In 2010, the show's first feature length episode was released directly onto DVD and was also shown in some cinemas during that year. The episode called "The Great Fire of Pontypandy" was also released in the U.K. iTunes market in April of 2010. The show's theme song was composed by Ian Lawson and Ben Heneghan with lyrics sang by Maldwyn Pope and written by Robin Lyons. In 2011, "Fireman Sam" was adapted into a live musical stage show which toured around the United Kingdom. Critics have praised the show for providing children with an entertaining mix of humour and light-hearted drama.
