About Flapper Dresses UK

The word 'Flapper' originates from the 1920s and was used to describe a woman who ignored social conventions and acted in an outrageous manner. In the Roaring 20s, life suddenly became more liberal, and young women turned their backs on traditional female roles. They began to cut their hair short, drink alcohol and wear more makeup. The short and flirty flapper dress that was fashionable at the time has become an icon of the era. Flapper dresses were characterised by several design features. The dresses were straight with no tapering to the body, and the waistlines were dropped to the hip. Flapper dresses were adorned with beaded designs that often incorporated intricate patterns inspired by the Art Deco period. The sleeveless styles, which left the arms bare, were considered shocking in the early twentieth century. Skirt lengths also scandalised the older generations, growing shorter and shorter until, by the late 1920s, they hit just below the knee. As the flapper girls danced to the new jazz music that was popular at the time, the skirts would reveal their legs. Some flapper girls enhanced this by wearing rouge on their knees. Nowadays, flapper dresses are a popular style for party and evening outfits. Modern flapper style dresses still feature the characteristic dropped waist design and heavy embellishments. Frills and tassels are often added, adding a retro touch to what has become a fashionable choice. A beaded clutch bag and finger-waved hair are the perfect accessories for this vintage look. Flapper dresses are also a great choice for fancy dress parties and Gatsby-inspired events. These can be enhanced with fun accessories such as bobbed wigs, cloche hats and feather boas.
