About Lead Welding Kit
The low melting point of lead makes it easy to soften and fuse together two sections of the metal. At the same time more care needs to be taken with lead welding than with other metals due to the fact that it can easily turn to the consistency of butter.
The contents of a lead welding kit include a blowtorch with hoses and nozzles, an oxygen canister, another gas canister (traditionally acetylene), safety goggles and flux. You will also require solder, a sharp knife, glass paper and steel wool in order to weld lead.
The process of lead welding involves making both sides of the metal to be welded smooth using a knife and then clean using steel wool. You then liberally apply flux with a clean paint brush to the metal. When welding, the blowtorch should be moved from side to side in order to "sweat" the lead rather than completely melt it. Both sides need to be softened in this way and then solder should be added on either side of the join using a pallet knife. The two sections can then be carefully joined together. As a final step, the join should be wiped with glass paper coated with flux.
Lead welding is a traditional part of plumbing and roofing. It is also used in various hobby and craft activities. For some applications, roofing being an example, it is convenient to have as portable a lead welding kit as possible so that it can be easily carried around a roof.
