The Christian Louboutin brand was created in 1991 by the French shoe designer of the same name. The firm produces high-fashion shoes, purses and wallets for an international clientÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂèle, selling its wares from boutiques and concessions across the world.
Paris-born Christian Louboutin studied at the AcadÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂémie d'Art Roederer, and worked with couturiers Charles Jourdan and Roger Vivier. Louboutin went on to design women's shows for top brands including Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent, before opening his first store in 1991. Most of the company's footwear is still created at a factory in Milan although a Parisian atelier is on hand to create bespoke pieces.
The brand's footwear is known for its iconic red lacquered sole, which is registered as Pantone 18-1663 TPX. A new pair of Louboutin shoes can retail forÃÂÃÂÃÂã365 and upwards, while one-off designs will sell for several thousand pounds. The shoes attained cult status after being featured in hit TV show Sex and the City, and celebrity fans include Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez and Sarah Jessica Parker.
In 2003, the company introduced a line of purses and handbags for the first time, and in 2011 a shoe collection for men was unveiled. The following year, the firm's first men's store opened in New York City. Christian Louboutin has also partnered with Batallure Beauty LLC to launch a luxury beauty line.
To celebrate 20 years in business in 2001, Christian Louboutin published a coffee-table book which chronicles his journey from apprentice designer to international fashion icon.
