About Motorbike Trailer
There is a surprising range of choice when it comes to buying a motorbike trailer. As well as pre-assembled units there are kits requiring you to put them together yourself. You can also choose between trailers for transporting a single motorbike, or those that are designed to carry two or three bikes and you will need to decide whether you want an open or closed trailer.
Open trailers are usually the least expensive, simply because less material is used in their construction. For transporting most motorbikes which are in good condition, these should prove adequate. Closed trailers may prove better for moving bikes that are badly damaged, or for classic and expensive models.
Similarly, a motorbike trailer for moving a single bike will be less expensive than a similarly designed trailer for three bikes. A three bike trailer is wider and may require a bigger towing vehicle to be able to adequately handle the increased load.
Do look at the construction of the trailer before you purchase, especially if you are considering buying a second hand or home-built model. A trailer in poor condition not only puts your bike at risk, but carries the risk of injuring other road users.
In order to safely secure a bike to a motorbike trailer, you should use a ramp to run the bike up, and straps to ensure that it is fully secured. Determine whether the trailer you are purchasing includes these and, if not, bear in mind that you will need to purchase them separately.
