About Multifunction Testers
A multifunction tester, also known as a multifunction installation tester, is a tool used by electricians for performing various safety tests on low voltage consumer-grade electrical circuits. These tests primarily include continuity, low ohms resistance, and insulation, high ohms resistance, although MFTs can also be used to test earth fault loop impedance, prospective short circuit currents, earth electrodes and residual-current devices. Being the vitally important tools of the trade that they are, multifunction testers tend to elicit high levels of brand loyalty among buyers. As a result, three names tend to dominate the market, Fluke, Megger and Kewtech.
Established in 1948, the Fluke Corporation has developed a world-class reputation over many years and is today among the most trusted on the market. Known for its rugged versatility, their comprehensive range of MFTs includes the 1654B which, among other capabilities, has a variable RCD current mode for customisation, voltage measurement select between L-N, L-PE and N-PE, as well as extended memory and a spacious carry case for additional storage room.
Megger MFTs all meet the requirements of the 17th Edition Wiring Regulations. Their range is three-tiered, with their most sophisticated features including programmable Type B RCD and 3-pole earth electrode testing, phase rotation, and current measurement with an optional clamp.
Another market leader, Kewtech, is well known for outperforming many other brands in the loop testing department. Their newer models offer state-of-the-art low current loop testing, as well as a high level of user safety when testing in insulation and continuity mode. Their older KT62 model is a stalwart in the industry, praised for its steady reliability and continued usefulness over many years.
