About Planetary Mixers
Planetary mixers are popular with most chefs and bakers mainly because of their versatility and familiarity - along with their counterpart, the spiral mixer. In fact, if you visit almost any bakery or pastry shop, you'll be guaranteed to find at least one planetary mixer, as they are so incredibly versatile, functional and simple to use.
The most distinguishable feature of the planetary mixer is its fixed bowl, which latches onto the machine's base and is adjustable so it can be raised into a mixing position, or lowered in order to remove the bowl.
One of the most attractive elements of a planetary mixer is the variety of different attachments that are available for mixing. Commonly, you'll find the following attachments included with your mixer; a whip, paddle and dough hook. The paddle attachment can be used for blending or creaming dough for scones, pies, cake batter, brownies or cookie dough. The whip is used to aerate mixtures for sponge cakes, meringues, mousse and whipped cream. The dough hook is commonly used for bread and pizzas.
Planetary mixers are usually available in table top or full floor versions, depending on what you need them for. Sizes are generally measured by the bowl's volume, which is typically measured in quarts (such as 8qt, 14qt, 20qt, 30qt, 40qt, 80qt etc.). Most planetary mixers also come with a variable speed setting so you can choose the best level of setting to suit your needs.
