About Pond Yacht

Pond yachts are model sailing ships which are capable of being sailed on a small body of water. Some are mass produced, whereas others are hand crafted or kit built by enthusiasts. They usually have large keels and a draught that is 15% to 20% deeper than full sized vessels. The pastime remains a popular one despite competition from radio controlled powered model vessels. There are various clubs for pond yacht enthusiasts and regular gatherings, called regattas, at which they demonstrate their craft and compete against one another in various styles of racing. Pond yacht regattas were held on the Serpentine as early as the 18th century. A peak of interest was reached in the 19th century when many clubs sprang up. One of these, based at The Round Pond in Kensington Gardens, was established in 1876 and is the oldest still surviving today. Available are various pond yachts for all levels of interest, whether you are an experienced pond yachtsman or wish to obtain a starter model. Some of the pond yachts offered are vintage models dating back as far as the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and are hard to find collector?s items. Some are painstakingly hand made by craftsmen and boast painstaking detail, whereas others are stripped down to the basics and aimed at hardcore racing enthusiasts. Many of the pond yachts on offer have been restored, and others would benefit from a little attention and repair work. Also offered are prints and illustrations of pond yachts, plus sails and hulls sold separately.
