There are a number of well known names within the field of woodwork, though few carry quite the same distinguished reputation as Robert Sorby.
Closely intertwined with the history of the company's hometown in Sheffield, Robert Sorby has been building its reputation for more than 100 years; although the woodwork trade in general dates even further to the Company of Cutlers that was formed in 1624. The master cutler at that time was Robert Soresby. He was voted into the position in 1628, and for the next 40 years his family (including his sons Malin and Robert) held the high office.
Robert Sorby as it exists today was registered in 1833, and remains probably the oldest edge tool maker in Sheffield - it is certainly the only one remaining from the date of registration.
Today, the company now occupies a site to the south-west of Sheffield, and operates as an autonomous division within a larger tool manufacturing group. In 1999, Robert Sorby decided to open its own retail store, a step which proved a sound investment, with the company continuing to supply other products such as glues, project accessories, machinery and books in addition to their full range of crafted Robert Sorby tools.
A wide range of Robert Sorby products can be purchased from the web today, at varying prices depending on whether the purchaser wants to take a second hand approach.
