Speedway is unique among motorsports, because the bikes have engines but no brakes. Each Speedway bike has a single-cylinder, four-stroke 500 CC engine running on pure methanol for a top speed of just over 80 mph.

Not only do the bikes lack brakes, they also lack transmissions, although a clutch is present to allow the rider to start the bike while stationary. The high compression does allow the rider some control over speed.
