If you are bottle-feeding your baby, it is extremely important that your bottles and accessories are cleaned and sterilised properly to ensure they are germ-free. There are three different types of sterilisers – a microwave steriliser, an electric steriliser and a cold-water steriliser. Several makes and models of sterilisers are available, some popular brands include Tommee Tippee, Avent and Dr Browns.
The electric and microwave sterilisers generate steam to sterilise bottles making them extremely quick and effective, taking between 3 and 12 minutes depending on the model chosen. A cold-water steriliser is a plastic container that is filled with water to which sterilising tablets or liquid are added. Bottles are soaked for 30 minutes and rinsed with boiling water afterwards.
