Anyone with a love of adventure and disaster movies will appreciate a story about the dangers of the ocean. Paul Gallico's novel The Poseidon Adventure is a classic of its genre. Based aboard a luxurious ocean liner called the SS Poseidon that capsizes due to an undersea earthquake, it follows the survivors of the disaster and their struggle to break out of the ship's hull before it sinks. Two films have been made based on the book â one in 1972 with a cast featuring among others Gene Hackman, Shelley Winters and Ernest Borgnine, and another in 2005 starring Rutger Hauer, Steve Guttenberg and Adam Baldwin. Each movie adaptation of the book features its own variation on the plot, with the same basic theme, survival against the odds from a sinking ship. Film DVDs can be found on eBay alongside film memorabilia, copies of the novel and â for the newer film production â Blu-ray disc versions. The Poseidon Adventure is a tale of disaster on the high seas that features personal tragedy and redemption, heroic acts and characters that take a traumatic journey to safety. It offers a thrilling plot with twists and turns to keep both reader and film enthusiast hooked until the last scene.
