Versace is an international fashion brand that combines catwalk fashion and high street sales. One of the world's leading fashion brands, it has become an internationally recognised brand.
Gianni Versace founded the brand in 1978 and found immediate fame, which turned to notoriety in 1994 when Elizabeth Hurley sported 'that' black dress held together with safety pins. Gianni was killed in a brutal murder in 1997, but Versace as a brand continued when his sister Donatella stepped in to take over as creative director. Despite being affected by the financial crisis, Versace has continued to prosper in recent times.
Now Versace has a number of lines, from top end couture to high street fashion and even homewares and fragrances. The controversy surrounding Versace has not dampened enthusiasm for its products and it is considered one of the best known brands in fashion.
Angelina Jolie, Gisele Bundchen, Madonna, Gwyneth Paltrow, Halle Berry, Eva Longoria, Ashton Kutcher and Drake are among the many celebrities to endorse the brand and model its clothes. Stars are known to ask Versace for items to wear to red carpet events and the Italian company rarely pays for endorsements.
While Versace has more affordable lines, too, there is a thriving market in used examples of its range-topping catwalk couture and handbags.
