About Vintage Grunge

Vintage grunge is a unique fashion style that's become more and more popular during the last few years. The trend - as the name suggests - is focused on reviving the distinctive look that first became popular in the 1990s, and was heavily influenced by the grunge music scene (of which bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains were a key part).

Grunge outfits vary, but common characteristics include the use of ripped jeans and flannel shirts (or black band t-shirts). However, there’s no uniform as such: the overall grunge feel is one of affordability and imperfection, so any clothes that fit in with that aesthetic can work. Holes, loose threads and other features that might be considered a problem in other styles are almost encouraged within the vintage grunge scene.

Other popular items of clothing within the grunge scene are floral knee-length dresses paired with torn stockings, oversized plaid shirts worn as jackets and heavy boots such as those made by Doc Martens. Faded denim shorts worn over tights is another common outfit choice. In terms of jewellery, popular accessories in the vintage grunge style include heavy silver bracelets matched with silver or pearl studded ear-rings.

Though there are some similarities between vintage grunge and other musically influenced-fashion trends fashion (such as Goth or Emo) grunge is separated from both in that whilst the other two are traditionally based around black and other dark shades, grunge often makes use of brighter colours such as blue, gray and maroon, as well as reds and whites.
