Sony developed the Walkman so people could walk about and listen to music with headphones. The original impetus for its creation was that the designer wanted to listen to operas during long flights.

Currently available for purchase are cassette, CD and MP3 players all referred to as Walkmans. Since 1978, this sound equipment has gotten smaller but with more audio and convenience features.
