About Waterloo Medals
Waterloo Medals were awarded to British soldiers involved in the Battle of Ligny, Battle of Quatre Bras or Battle of Waterloo.
Some reproduction Waterloo Medals are available, many of them scale replicas rather than full-sized medals. Genuine Waterloo Medals are silver disks with a width of 37mm. The front of the medal features the face of the Prince Regent, featuring the words ?George P. Regent?, while the back features Victory with the words ?Wellington?, ?Waterloo? and ?June 15 1815.? Collectors should also note that the medal was the first to have the recipient?s name impressed around the edge by use of machine.
Medals may come with a ribbon woven through an iron ring attached to the medal itself. The official ribbon given with the medal was crimson with dark blue edges. Some Waterloo Medal ribbons are sold separately from their medals, and some sellers offer reproduction ribbons so be sure to check authenticity if buying for a collection.
As the medals themselves are silver there may be some tarnishing or scratches, and the iron rings originally used to join medal to the ribbon may have been removed. Ensure that every part of the product satisfies your needs prior to purchase, as some real medals may be sold with replica ribbons or rings.
Waterloo Medals may come with a display case or box, history book, information card and real or replacement. No accessories should be assumed as standard.
