About West Ham
Founded in 1895 as Thames Ironworks FC, the club started out as a strictly amateur venture with works employees making up the team. That soon changed, though, as the outfit changed its name to West Ham United and went on to become one of the longest running members of the football league. West Ham United joined the league in 1919. By 1923 it was in the top flight and it also featured in the first FA Cup Final to be held at Wembley. The team that is known as The Irons and The Hammers, thanks to its roots in the ironworks, went on to win the inaugural Football League War Cup in 1940. The club won the FA Cup three times by 1980, as well as the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1965 and the Intertoto Cup in 1999. West Ham United are one of just eight clubs that have spent their entire existence in the top two divisions of English football. It has never won the league, but West Ham United has helped a number of legends on their way to success, including Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst, Martin Peters and Frank Lampard. The Hammers have enjoyed fanatical support, even through the lean times, and every team that visits Upton Park expects a fiery reception from the East London crowd. As with many football teams there's a whole range of West Ham United merchandise, from replica kits through to stickers for your car.
