A merchant ship had greater space available to carry cargo, so as to capitalize upon her costs. These full hull ships had deep holds often with poor ventilation which led to many claims against masters & owners due to damaged goods. It was more important to haul a ship's cargo safely at sea than to make fast passages, until later when the days of the clipper ship arrived.
