Now, Shakespeare Rocks!

Created: 02/06/06
How many teen movies have we had to sit through? 10 Things I hate about You is just one of many- but instead of being just 'another teen movie', box offices expected this to be a hit amongst the twenty-five-and-unders.
This hilarious comedy based loosely on William Shakespeare’s classic The Taming of the Shrew, has brilliant screenplay and on-target jokes written by Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith. While the film portrays the teen anguish over dating, romance, family rules and peer pressure, director Gil Junger keeps the comedy light and playful. Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger are amongst the little-known, but talented actors who bring a unique freshness to the movie. And now, Shakespeare ‘rocks’!This film is definitely one-of-a-kind. The brilliant screenplay, talented actors and witty one-liners all contribute to the overall intensity- an intensity that will surprise many. It has a perfectly compiled soundtrack that mixes indie-rock, new-wave ‘80’s songs and angry chick rock. The actors are completely suited to these roles- no-one could play Kat better than Stiles. Also, it isn’t ‘preachy’, in fact the adults are more bizarre than the kids- the guidance counsellor (Allison Janney), who spends her time at work writing an erotic novel, the English teacher(Daryll Chill Mitchell) who raps his way through Shakespeare’s sonnets, and lastly the overprotective father(Larry Miller) who spends his days ‘up to his elbows in placenta’. ‘10 Things I Hate About You’ proves once and for all that there is still an opening for the teen genre. This witty comedy is a wildly entertaining look at exactly how far some guys will go to get a date. Anyone that sees this film will be outrageously amused by the cool cast of young stars, the hip soundtrack and the sharp humour that penetrates even the uninterested. After seeing this film, you will definitely ‘need a day to cool off’. ‘Maybe two’.

10 things i hate about you

Created: 31/05/08
I loved this movie from the time i first watched it at the cinema back in 1999 until this day. basically the story is about a new kid in school who has the hots for the popular beautiful girl of his dreams, he becomes besotted and becomes her friend to the point where he comes up with an idea of tutoring her french as a way of getting close to her, at first she only sees him as guy she goes to school with and so he hatches a plan to date her, one problem though her dad has laid down a rule that there is to be no dating until graduation. there is however a twist here, he changes the rule that she can date but only if her older sister dates. sounds simple right. but the issue here is that her sister is a man hating femenist rebel with attitude. so finding a guy who could get behind this hard exterior could be asking for the impossible. however there is such a guy, he himself is a bit of a rebel with a reputation - over time cameron persuades patrick that its worth dating kat so that he can get his date, enter joey, a rich egotistical male model who has also set his sights on the alluring young bianca, joey also knows that his only chance with biance is to get patrick and cat together so he agrees to persuade pattric by offering him money to tempt him to carry through the plan. no i wont say anymore about the plot but these 2 rebels are in a way kindered spirits and what starts out as hate quickly becomes love as they see through each others hard shell. the film brought attention to the brilliantly cast julia stiles as kat and the late promising actor heath ledger as patrick who both deliver excellent performances. in this modern day tiwst of shakespears classic the taming of the shrew with characters who you can relate to and a good suppoting cast and a one of the best ficticous teachers ever - it would be so cool to have a teacher like that. its an underated teen rom com and i advise others to at least take a look, seeming how cheap this is it holds pride of place in my dvd collection after wearing my vhs out.

Classic teen movie

Created: 08/09/08
This is a classic teen movie. Good acting. I bought it as I am a big Heath Ledger fan! Updated version of William Shakespeare's "Taming of the Shrew," set at the fictional Padua High School in Tacoma where a new transfer student, Cameron, is interested in the popular sophomore Bianca Stratford. But Bianca's overprotective and domineering father forbids Bianca to date unless her older sister Katerina, an unpopular and hostile senior, does. In a bid to get Katerina a boyfriend, Cameron sets up a plan to have the school stud, Joey Donnar, bribe Patrick Verona, an outcast senior with a rumor-filled past, to take the volatile Katerina out on dates so he can go to the school's homecoming dance with Bianca. However, neither Pat or Kat expect their 'going steady' to lead where nobody expects it too!

TRIBUTE TO HEATH LEDGER

Created: 24/01/08
10 Things I Hate About You is a fairly basic teen love story, but with the added twist of Shakespeare and very good comedic acting.

The story is based on Shakespeare's Taiming of the Shrew. It is about two sisters, one very popular, Bianca Stratford(sexy: Larisa Oleynik) and the other, Katrina or "Kat"(superb: Julia Stiles) hated because of her gruff character. Their overbearing father(hilarious: Larry Miller), devises a scheme whereby Bianca cannot date until rebellious Kat does, which seems an impossibility. Thereby is set up a scheme to pair Kat off with the roguish Patrick Verona(outstanding: Heath Ledger). One of the masterminds of this plot is Cameron James(cute: Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a newcomer to Padua high, where the movie takes place. The other is his assistant of sorts, Michael Eckman(David Khyumoltz).

Though somewhat predictable, especially if you have read Taming of the Shrew, it is an interesting light diversion. The dialogue is quite well done, interwining a word or phrase from Shakespeares with modern teen slang. Other does to Shakespeare are seen in Kat's friend who idolizes him as if he is a teen heartthrob, plus reading of his works in one Kat's classes. The timing in the dialogue is also very Shakespearean. It's very rapid fire. I think both David Khumoltz and Larry Miller are amazingly funny!

Something a bit deeper than the usual teen trash movie

Created: 04/02/08
A remake of Shakespeare's 'Taming the Shrew', and a really good one, without the moral or women should know thier place that the original play had.

Quirky characters, that although (of course) are exagerated, they ARE belivable, and I know a few that were just like people I went to high school with.

It's a film that deals with real life love, life and tribulations without 'talking down' to the audience, and although it is a comedy, its also an enjoyable and deals with some of the truely insane things teenagers have to deal with.

The first real staring role for Heath Ledger, and a platform for which he, Julia Stiles and David Krumholtz became well recoginised actors.

The main reason I loved it was that it had some actual depth at the same time as being a comedy - it wasn't the drama, drama, drama - bitchy teenager social hieracy, deep as a puddle rubbish they churn out now.

5/5 highly recomended - I saw it in high school, and it still come out some 6 years later!
