I've bought 2 of these, the S version 18 months ago before the prices went up and recent the X version. OK Western Digital Caviar are not the premier suppliers of disks but then again if you're looking for the most for your money it's a brand that crops up time and time again. Prices have started to fall again after the shortage so this effectively means you can buy storage at the price of less than 5p per usable Gigabyte, it seems only yesterday that the £1 per Gig level was reached.

Previously, installing a 5,400 RPM disk as a system drive was probably not a great idea, you'd get better random access performance from a 7,200 RPM drive. But the amazing speeds of this drive mean you WILL see a performance increase by putting your OS on it. 60MBPS seemedto be the average from my experience for the S version, the X version has doubled that to 110MBPS write, 120MPS read which is pretty good.

I have these as data only drives holding photos (a LOT of photos), video, ISO images, backups etc. basically a lot of larger files. 5,400 RPM drives tend to have a better sustained data rate so these are ideal for media streaming.

Great internal drive for my son's media player.. quick and easy to install too! I would recommend this product and of course can be used as a normal extra hard drive too.
