Like HDTV extra processing power that won't be used

Unless you use software that has been specifically written for multi-core processors (like some newer adobe graphical applications) you are wasting your money as a single-core processor may well be faster than the multi-core processor that you have upgraded to! It is only newer and faster hard disk and graphics technology on a new system board that gives the impression of better performance when you use a dual or quad core processor. In my own case I upgraded from a AMD 3700+ (2.4 GHz) which has double the cache memory and a faster clock speed than diagnostics show on this particular multi-core processor. In fairness to these new processors, belated research indicates that you may get a benefit if you run multiple applications although I have not yet seen convincing evidence of this. In summary if you get hooked by the advertised added-up processing power of these new chips as I did, your game or single principle work application will not run faster until new software actually uses the additional (but frequently idle) processing power.
