Good iPad alternative....

The Advent Vega is an excellent piece of kit.

1200x600 display
Dual core (Tegra 2) chipset
HDMI out
Good battery life
Very responsive capactive 10.1 inch multi-touch screen

Out of the box it comes with a fairly minimalist, cut-back Android ROM. There is no Market available, and there are few apps installed. The Advent website actually promotes installing your own ROMs though, so it's possible to unlock all the capabilities of this device quite easily. I would not recommend flashing ROMs to anyone who does not have a reasonable degree of skill or computer understanding, but it's a worthwhile 'skill' to learn. I currently have mine running VegaComb - Android 3.0 - courtesy of some fantastic work done by the guys on www.tabletdroid.com - and it's stunning. The user interface is leaps and bounds above Android 2.0 - it's like comparing Windows 98 with Windows 7. With tens of thousands of apps out there, a large chunk of them free, this is a real viable alternative to the iPad - and less restricted.

great little item, will start with cons as pro's will explain better.

cons:

item dosnt arrive with market or flash or anything very handy, it is basically a mobile phone operating system with alot of things removed, u only get basic stuff with it like sound recorder, calender, calculator, google search, that kind of thing, the screen can also be over sensitive at times, and also caused me to reset the device by accident after hacking it as i accidently clicked recovery and there is no pop up saying are you sure, which would actually be the first time id say something NEEDED it. battery life is so so when running on high brightness and using it constantly

pros:

this device is very hackable, you can basically install one of plenty of options for new operating systems, even in the works and partially working is andriod honeycomb which is the latest operating system used on the newest devices like the motorola xoom. it also makes the tablet faster rather than slower which you might be used to from PC operating systems. screen is immaculate, build feels safe, bit heavy though so dont go dropping it. once hacked, you get android market, u can even install some paid for apps for free by searching on google for them, hacking adds so many features youll get lost for weeks setting it all up and getting the 5 home pages setup how you want, creating ur own animated background and using fingerprint technology to add a security screen when turned on, or maybe thats just me couldnt resist, felt like something from CSI haha.

overall GREAT item, also you will need another memory card for it if you only get one with the 4gb card, u need a Mini HDSC card, if you wish to add many songs and videos to it.

i was looking for a budget tablet that wasnt a cheap chinese copy of the ipad..i looked at the galaxy tab and this advent.when i compared the specs the advent came out on top.the only downside i could see was the android OS.this tablet with the the standard does not have any market access but with the upgraded rom from modaco, this rectifies that.the tablet now loads web pages faster than my quad core pc,the touch screen is brilliant and on a par with the ipad...not kidding on that point.lol.if like me your on a budget then pound for pound this dual core tablet is well worth your money.but do get the modaco rom as this turns the tablet into a pleasant beast.lol

Note: Review based on updated Advent Vega to custom ROM "Android v3.2 update 9n".
With Android 3.2 it is a very good tablet (I have 3 other Android tablets and 2 Android phones to comp-are with). Responsive, fast, compatible are p-lus-points. The negatives includes not the best screen, below average viewing angles, microphone picks up noise on my Vega, OK (but not great) battery life. The build quality is not the best, but not too bad either.

At first glance buying this tablet appears a no-brainer. Where else can you find a 10" capacitive display, 512Mb and a dual core processor for about £100?

That was the state of play in Q1 2012.

I had to send mine back, a relatively painless experience. The problems were two fold, and I believe, quite common with the Advent Vega.

The screen really does have a ludicrous viewing angle- you may well have to tilt it as you read down the screen. This is a well documented problem, and being mostly refurbished units on sale should not still occur. But it does, hence I was skeptical that an "update" could fix it. The deal killer for me was that the screen was also completely unresponsive. Once in standby I couldn't swipe the screen to reawaken the tablet.

Some people have good experiences, but for me the lead time to buy it and possibly send back several times meant my money could be better spent elsewhere.
