A dinky little computer!

Created: 20/12/10
It's no longer the latest model of Mac mini, but this is still an excellent computer for home or business use. It takes up next to no space on the desktop, runs very quietly, and of course it's a Mac, so the interface is intuitive and uncluttered.

The standard 80 or 120 GB drives that came with this model when new are not particularly generous: if you have a large music or video library, you may start to run out of space. Similarly, you may find that the standard 1 GB of RAM is not quite enough if you're going to do serious video editing.
However, it's easy enough to replace both if you're handy with a decorator's filling knife (yes, really - this is the recommended tool for opening the case). I'd thoroughly recommend upgrading, as this will give you a computer that will last you for several years.

The Mac mini takes a standard laptop drive (Serial ATA, 2.5" x 1/8 U). These are very cheap at the moment, so get the largest one you can find (I paid £40 for a 500 GB drive in Dec 2010). Memory modules also need to be laptop style: SODIMM modules of DDR2 SDRAM memory, running at 667 MHz (PC2-5300). A word of caution: It is physically possible to install 4 GB (2 modules of 2 GB each) in this revision of the Mac mini, and it WILL work (though only 3 GB will be visible to the operating system). However I would suggest you don't do this, as I have found that this prevents operating system updates from installing successfully. Stick to 2 or 3 GB of RAM - which is enough for an entry-level computer like this anyway! - and you'll be fine.

In summary: unless you're wanting a computer for high-octane gaming, the 2007-8 Mac minis won't disappoint.

PS. Oh, and upgrade to Snow Leopard if yours doesn't already have it. It has many useful features that Tiger doesn't have (Time Machine is a life-saver and reason enough to upgrade by itself), and it runs more smoothly and quickly than Leopard. Just do it, OK? :-)

This is an excellent device! I purchased this to build apps for the iPhone and this is has proven itself to be more than adequate for the job. I now have a 2Tb external drive that holds all my photos, music and films and this system makes using these so much easier than I thought it would.

The learning curve for OSX is not as steep as I was concerned it would be (I have decades of experience of Windows with a little experience of Unix and Linux) whilst the tools are outstanding. Very impressed.

A superb Item and superb Ebay seller

Created: 09/08/10
An absolutely fabulous piece of kit from Apple. Although it seem's to lack power in terms of playing games, I have on the contrary discovered some very good contemporary 2D games which takes me back to playing my Commodore 64..I however didn't buy this Mini Mac predominately for games.
It is a very fast and responsive machine, I think 'efficient' would be a good term to use. Excellent set up for music editing using Logic Pro (the reason I bought this). I am at some point going to be checking out Final Cut Pro too!
All in all a super item and a reasonable price. Great seller too! I really couldn't be happier with this purchase!

Apple Mac Mini a good buy

Created: 14/04/10
I turned to the 'dark side' a few years ago and have always been impressed with how Apple present their products not forgetting their great OS. The Mac Mini is a brilliant machine. Great as a home media centre or a desktop machine. Its space saving design is great for the office or lounge. I bought this one second hand to give to my Dad to convert him to the Apple product. This machine is idea for anyone who already has a screen, mouse and keyboard.
In short a worth while investment for anyone thinking of moving to the "Dark Side".

I'm going to get converted to a mac fan

After using vista, this is such an improvement. Why didn't I get a mac before. This mac mini is exacty what I was after. Superb introduction to Max Os and the UI. The disk is a bit small, but I can always get an external drive for that.
