Album Notes
Barenaked Ladies: Steven Page (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, flute, piano); Ed Robertson (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, percussion); Jim Creeggan (violin, cello, acoustic & electric bass, background vocals); Kevin Hearn (electric guitar, banjo, accordion, piano, electric piano, Clavinet, melodica, organ, keyboards, synthesizer, samples, background vocals); Tyler Stewart (vocals, drums, bongos, percussion).Additional personnel: Natacha Hebert (spoken vocals); Colin Alexander (scratches); Don Garbutt (samples); "French Pete" Tremblay (background vocals).Producers: Susan Rogers, David Leonard, Barenaked Ladies.Recorded at Arlyn Studios, Austin Texas in Feburary 1998 and Phase One Studios, Scarborough, Ontario in March 1998."One Week" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal.STUNT is another tightly wound, witty, melodic Barenaked Ladies album, with songs that range from dangerously manic to contemplative and nearly sweet. The slightly psychotic white boy rap on "One Week" employs wacky lyrical ingenuity, with such lines as "Hot like wasabi when I bust rhymes/Big like LeAnn Rimes." On the other hand, the charm of "In The Car" lies in its twangy alt-country sound and a sense of nostalgia for a more naive time. Barenaked Ladies' lyrics can veer awfully close to being precious, but they avoid crossing the line with a magical combination of intelligence, biting cynicism, and a refusal to take themselves too seriously.

Cunning Stunt

Created: 06/09/06
Seeing this cd on ebay brought back memories of the mid to late 90's and a tape which I played in my car on long drives. I had originally obtained a copy of Stunt simply for the big hit single One Week, which is a mixture of cracking tune, great lyrics (if somewhat strange), and an interesting bit of mid-west white man rapping in the middle. Dr Dre would never say "Chickety China, The Chinese chicken, you have a drumstick, and your heart stops ticking"! The other top track on the album is the delightful ballad, Light Up My Room, which is as gentle a love song as you would hear, but in no ways soppy for want of a better word. The rest of the album is filled with some really good songs, musically and lyrically, with a great diversity in tempo and emphasis. For a top example of 90's songwriting, check out The Barenaked Ladies. A cunning Stunt, indeed.

Anyone who has to read a review of this album is clearly a bit mad. Stunt is probably Barenaked Ladies finest work. It is so quintessentially late 90's it can't fail to bring back some memories of a simpler time.

The music itself is an eclectic hybrid of MOR rock, folk and pop with many references thrown to the pop culture of the era.

The 2 disc version provides the buyer with 2 version of the amazing song "Brian Wilson" and a live version of the ever brilliant "If I Had a Million Dollars".

The long and short of it is, when you can purchase this record on eBay for less than 3 quid, it is certainly money well spent.

I'd go so far as to say that it's almost impossible to find someone who doesn't enjoy at least half the tracks on this album.

Barenaked Ladies-stunt cd 1999

I already had 1 Barenaked Ladies album, and enjoyed it so much that I decided to buy this one also. It totally lives up to the quality that I was expecting. The first track on this album- One Week, is such a catchy tune. The music is fast and up beat with excellent, funny lyrics that are easy to relate too. Whenever I hear this track I cant help but dance. This song will definately get your feet tapping. The rest of the album continues in similar fashion, with great music and lyrics. Easy listening with a very distinctive sound. Everyone should have at least this one album in their collection. Very enjoyable and the sort of cd that you never tire of listening to.

"One Week" is an oustanding track, the rest are better than mediocre but not entirely amazing. 4* rating because it's not completely filler.
