Album Notes
Annotator Daryl Easlea begins his liner notes to the Beautiful South's entry in Universal Music International's discount-priced Gold series of double-CD compilations by commenting on the surprising fact that the best-selling album in the U.K. in the 1990s was the group's 1994 hits collection, Carry on Up the Charts, and it is therefore worth noting that all 14 of the tracks on that disc are repeated among the 36 on this one. (In the U.S., a 15th track was added to Carry on Up the Charts, a cover of "Dream a Little Dream of Me"; that song is not contained here.) Easlea ends his essay by describing Gold as "Packed with all their major hits and album tracks from their first decade," a statement that is only true if you don't count the missing "Pretenders to the Throne" (which reached number 18 in the U.K.), "How Long's a Tear Take to Dry?" (number 12), and "The River/Just Checkin'" (number 59); all three, not coincidentally, no doubt, are included on 2002's Solid Bronze: Great Hits. That album was criticized at the time of its release as an imperfect follow-up compilation to Carry on Up the Charts, and Gold, which in addition to being incomplete is sequenced randomly, is not ideal, either. Probably, one can no longer blame that on the group, which decamped its original label, Go! Discs, in 2003, after Universal had acquired it in 1998. Even if a few favorites are missing, however, Gold is still a good gathering of what is arguably some of the most popular British pop music of the 1990s (and given Paul Heaton's black-humored lyrics, that's saying something), presented at a reasonable price. (These statements, of course, apply primarily to Great Britain. The album was not released in the U.S., where the Beautiful South's profile, never high, was practically nonexistent in 2006.) ~ William Ruhlmann

The Beautiful South ....... GOLD

Created: 01/06/06
What can you say about The Beautiful South that hasn't already been said before.
If you're a Fan then you'll already have this, if you're not go out and buy this album.
In my opinion they are the best band in the world, aside from The Housemartins, but they don't really count do they?
The Beautiful South have survived for nearly 17 years now, formed in 1989, following the split of The Housemartins, Paul begged, borrowed and stole the band line up from other little known bands from in and around the Hull area and apart from Alison Wheeler, the latest and most attractive female member to join the band, the other members have never changed.
I was there at the 1st tour in 1989 and i will be at the last, whenever that happens, but in my opinion The Beautiful South can do no wrong, even if this is the 3rd Greatest Hits compilation they've released, as far as i'm concerned there will never be enough The Beautiful South albums, we want more please, lets say, 1 every 6 months.
Long live The South........

GREAT CD

Created: 08/07/06
IF YOUR A TRUE BEAUTIFUL SOUTH FAN THIS CD YOU WILL LOVE THIS FROM THEM, THE ONLY PROBLEM I HAVE WITH THIS GREATEST HITS COLLECTION IS THAT PRETENDERS TO THE THRONE AND HOW LONGS A TEAR TAKE TO DRY ARE MISSING FROM THIS DOUBLE CD.
IF YOUR BUYING BEAUTIFUL SOUTH MUSIC FOR THE FIRST TIME THEN THIS CD WILL OPEN YOUR EYES TO A BAND THAT DO NOT RECIEVE THE RECOGNITION THAT THEY SO RICHLY DESERVE AND IT WILL HOPEFULLY ENCOURAGE YOU TO LOOK AT THE PREVIOUS CDS AS THIS CD NOT ONLY HAS ALL THEIR SINGLES BUT HAS SONGS FROM ALBUMS AS WELL.
THE BEAUTIFUL SOUTH ARE AN EXCELLENT BAND AS IS THIS CD SO BUY THIS AND ENJOY

Just another compilation.

When they brought out Carry On Up The Charts although the songs were in the order they were released, the songs flowed with each other. This on the other hand is one of the worst compilations I have ever heard with songs like Bell Bottomed Tear following Let Go With The Flow.

Band For Whoever!

Created: 10/11/08
As a lover of The Beautiful South I had to buy the album to maintain having a complete collection. It was hard to buy the album from a shop or online retailer as I was aware it was just an attempt from the record company to cash in after the band moved to Sony.

Obtaining it via Ebay was an appropriate compromise.

The sleeve picture doesn't do the band justice. All the original male band members,Paul,Dave R. Dave H. Dave S. & Sean continued with The Beautiful South throughout from inception to breaking up due to musical similarities & there were 3 different girl singers, so why highlight just part of the band?

Roll on the reformation!
