Description
On October 3, 1993, Army Rangers and members of the elite Delta Force participated in a covert operation in Mogadishu, Somalia that went horribly wrong. Sent to abduct two lieutenants of a vicious Somali warlord, the soldiers found themselves surrounded by hostile militia. Two Black Hawk helicopters were shot down and many men lost their lives. Mark Bowden of the Philadelphia Inquirer told the story of the battle in his exhaustively researched, critically acclaimed book, BLACK HAWK DOWN, and filmmaker Ridley Scott (GLADIATOR) and screenwriter Ken Nolan have done an amazing job of bringing the dramatic story to the screen. Like Bowden's book, the film does not thoroughly examine the context of the conflict, but gives a detailed and intense blow-by-blow account of the fighting. The outstanding ensemble cast includes Josh Hartnett as a competent but nervous Ranger sergeant leading his first mission, Ewan McGregor as a "desk jockey" who excels when sent into combat, Eric Bana (THE INCREDIBLE HULK) as a cocky and enigmatic Delta, and Ron Eldard as a downed Black Hawk pilot. The violence of the film is brutal and nearly constant. Scott unflinchingly captures the chaos and mayhem of battle with tremendous visual finesse.

Black Hawk Down

Created: 08/01/07
As this was a true story,I don't no how much poetical licence was given to the facts by the script writer. If it was true then I am completely amazed how the General became a General in Modern warfare, as he obviously must have been watching some of the World War 1 scenes of sending Millions of men to their deaths for no reason. here we have a helicopter shot down, and a considerable number of "good guy Americans"getting killed to retreive their six dead bodies. No matter what the cost we will do it. The film itself was full of action, bit of bodies flying everywhere, and to what end....Very watchable, full of action but you have to ask(SNAFU)Situation Normal all Fcuked Up, why did they waste more life.

Black Hawk Down movie

Created: 12/11/08
On Sunday 3rd October 1993, 140 US soldiers stormed the Bakara Market in Mogadishu, Somalia, to capture two lieutenants in the service of a local warlord. What should have been a simple search and capture operation lasting under an hour, turned into a hellish battle in a foreign city that didn't end until the following morning, when the troops were finally evacuated. The US army suffered its heaviest losses since the Vietnam War.

As a war film, "Black Hawk Down" is first rate. It's exciting, well paced, and full of lots of action. Director Ridley Scott proves to be at home with the adrenalin rush of modern technological warfare, piling on the firefights, helicopter crashes, and bloody carnage. Continuing the visceral tradition of war films post-"Saving Private Ryan", "Black Hawk Down" scatters body parts round the screen like confetti.

The problem is that its subject - American soldiers fighting Somali Muslims - is too close to the current world situation to suit a no-brains action story. In a belated attempt to mould the film to suit the post-September 11th climate, the film makers have added a series of opening and closing titles that desperately try to say something about the Battle of Mogadishu's wider significance, but these simply seem hastily written and ill advised.

"Black Hawk Down" doesn't so much lose sight of the political factors behind the action, as never actually notice them until after the event - making it less a film about the American experience in Somalia than a patriotic airbrushing of what was actually America's worst day of combat since Vietnam.

The only parallel it really wants us to draw with the contemporary international situation is a facile message about the US of A as an ass-kicking superpower - and that's why it gets top marks for the action; zero marks for the message.

Amazing Modern War film.

Created: 11/07/10
Im quite a war film fan. I've seen most WW2 or Vietnam films. So when someone recommends a film about a modern conflict, I was naturally interested. Black Hawk Down is a terrfic film about the american involvement in the battle of mogadishu, Somalia. Which to this day stil is a war zone. The film is very well made, and as it is based on a true story you connect to the film and you believe you were there, as these tragic events happened. Overall a very good film, that is definatly worth a watch as it is so well made, and the actors give amazing performances. That leaves a lasting impression on your mind. So, watch Black Hawk Down and see the action of a true story, that gives such a good impression on your mind.

good war film and excellent dvd release

Created: 07/09/07
I bought the film because I'd seen it before and I liked it very much. It's quite a simple story but pictures and music are really state-of-the-art. And even though Americans are not surprisingly shown as the good guys, there is really tolerable amount of pathos. The film is supposed to be based on actual events but I don't know to what extent. For example I hardly believe that all the soldiers taking part in the action were so sympathetic. If it was really the upper crust of soldiers at least some of them should be unfeeling killing machines. Idealized a bit it may be still I would recommend it to all who like war films. Women probably won't enjoy it (people are killing each other and there is no love).
Also this dvd has a lot of goodies like: making of, commentaries, drawings etc.

big bada boom

as with all reviews i write, im biased when it comes to films starring ewan mcgregor as i totally love him.
black hawk down isn't really my kind of film, it was incredibly well action packed but i like to know whats going on in a film and in this case, why theyre at war, yet i never fully understood that maybe perhaps as im not knowledgeable about foregin countries political issues.
apart from this i loved this film especially when ewan mcgregors character was blown up 3 times, he still managed to stay alive till the end. this film is very entertaining with great special effects and keeps you on your toes at all times with all the explosions and gun fights and the night fight at the end is especially spectacular.
this relly is a great film and should be added to every dvd collection!
