Blackberry 8900 email instant messing CURVE 8900

Created: 14/10/10
Review for: BlackBerry Curve 8900 - Black (Unlocked) Smartphone (MPN UK)
Features
At the core of the 8900 beats the same email-dedicated heart as in any other BlackBerry. Before we discuss all of its other features, it has to be pointed out that, when it comes to email, the 8900 performs well. Whether you're setting up a personal or work account, doing so using the desktop redirect software isn't difficult. You can hook the device up to a BlackBerry server at work or use the online service to set up as many as ten different accounts.

Once past its serious heart, the rest of the 8900 is much more fun. There's a music player that handles various music formats, including MP3 and AAC, and a video player that handles certain DivX and Xvid files (some you have to convert, using the provided software). The music and video player are competent enough; you can set playlists, shuffle tracks and use normal headphones. Videos look particularly good on the 8900's screen, which, although small, gives a clear and bright picture.

Less clear are the images taken by the 3.2-megapixel camera. It produces good shots for small prints and MMS messages, but you'll notice the low resolution of the camera when you blow pictures up. The camera can shoot both still shots and video. At night, you can use the LED photolight to provide some illumination, but, if your subject is standing further than a metre away in low light, then don't expect great things -- a xenon flash would have been better.

We didn't know what to expect from the BlackBerry Curve 8900 but were pleasantly surprised by its attractive, slim design. A full Qwerty keypad and sharp screen means emails and instant messaging are a joy to deal with, but the lack of 3G occasionally bugged us and makes the 8900 a little less desirable than it would otherwise have been

But the phone isn’t perfect. It isn’t a mini clone of the Bold, it’s a different device, which might irk those who want or need faster data rates. Whilst the build quality is good all over, a few things niggle: some play in the keyboard, a common problem on previous Curves, and the catch on the back cover that seems a little too lightweight for the job.

The BlackBerryCurve 8900 sounds like an appealing phone overall and it is, especially if you are an existing Curve user. It takes all those things that defined the BlackBerry Curve as a great business tool and gives it a consumer sheen, so you don’t have to feel as though you made a compromise. Start typing the name of a contact, and having the contacts and all the contact options start appearing, still make this a very easy device to use, whatever form of communication you choose.

Business users will appreciate the subtle touches in the software – as found on the Bold and Storm – such as bedside mode where you can disable the LED and even the phone radio and display clock on the face. Having a fullscreen clock whilst charging is also a nice touch. We’ve said it before on Pocket-lint with those other models, and we’ll say it again: it really considers how you want the phone to behave in these conditions.

The Curve 8900 is a comfortable and faithful companion whether for work or play, in calls or emails. It’s just a shame that as a new device, with a focus so firmly on data, it doesn’t come with HSDPA, which may push some towards the Bold.

Review for: BlackBerry Curve 8900 - Black (Unlocked) Smartphone (MPN UK)
It took me a long time to plunge into the action of making this purchase. I did not want a phone which was expensive or difficult to operate but I did want the access to mobile email and occasional internet browsing. The latter is a tiny and poor view with some quirky navigation and hardly a joyful experience, but for email it is great.

I also like the instant message service between blackberry users as it saves the cost of a text.

Phone reception and clarity is toptastic.

The buttons on the qwerty keyboard are a freaking fiddle but soon become familiar and faster in operation, although I detest the micro numerals, in red. These would have been better in white such as on the Palm.

You pay for excellent build quality which is fairly robust.

The battery is frustrating Grrrrr..very poor life, 2 days tops, so not good at all.

Overall, I recommend but check the Palm Treo first. At times I wish I did.

Shamanpan.

BLACKBERRY PHASE

Review for: BlackBerry Curve 8900 - Black (Unlocked) Smartphone (MPN UK)
I've been wanting to get a phone that i can be less careful about. I've had two touch screens in the past 2 and a half years, I myself love the luxury of being able to text effortlessly on my phone; so when I upgraded my contract from a Samsung omnia to a HTC HD2 man i was impressed. This phone is beautiful, it is temperature operated, meaning you can't use your nails and the tiniest about of pressure is applied to make it do things for you. My hand has basically become a fitting glove to my HTC the phone is massive. It's so effortless everything i do, needs barely any hand movement.
I wanted to get a blackberry, they were a much cheaper alternative and plus it had become some sort of fad. Everyone has one, it's all about the BBpin's these days. I have to say, it's good, sleek design and keyboard. But if you are a converting touch screen user to keyboard, you'll find it hard. I still really hate the idea of buttons, they are so loud. but overall a pretty decent phone, not amazing, not good. But pretty decent.
