BlackBerry’s first venture into touch-screen only. And well worth a look.

Cards on the table – I’m a BlackBerry fan. I have an Android tablet and some experience with Apple’s IOS 6.0, but this is my second BB device (replacing a Curve 8900) and I’ve been using it now happily for almost a year. So I’ll try to be objective, but it always helps to know where a reviewer is coming from.

Touch screen only – For me this was a difficult decision as it was the physical keyboard that brought me to BlackBerry at first. But I have to say it took very little getting used to and is arranged basically the same the traditional BlackBerry keyboard. Just one oddity – on my BB Curve I was used to a currency key offering one key-press for a GBP sign. On the 9860, even when set to UK English, it takes a total of 3 key presses to get the GBP sign yet only 2 for USD. Strange.

Camera – Whilst I’m a firm believer that if you want something to take really great photos you are better off going to the camera store, I have to say the camera on the 9860 is surprisingly good. Autofocus works well and the flash-light is used for focus-assist in low light conditions. I've met many worse stand-alone digital cameras.

Device memory – only 4GB, and many criticise this. I use a 32GB Micro SD card, and the phone defaults to using it for music, photo and video storage, so you may ask 'where’s the problem?' But it isn’t quite so simple. App storage (where the Apps are actually installed) has a relatively small allocation within the 4GB internal storage. Basically, install too many apps, and the device will slow down and run into difficulties. (That said, I have 33 third-party apps installed with no problems). And speaking of Apps – people say BlackBerry’s choice is limited, but just look in BlackBerry World and see if it has what you need. There might be more options available than you think.

Office Sync – My main requirement for the BB is working with Word and Excel files and synchronising with a local Microsoft Outlook account. To me it’s simply the best at this, handling Outlook calendar exceptions better than any of the competition. And the way BBs handle multiple email accounts is again, in my opinion, second to none. Everything clear and in one place.

Battery life – BlackBerry 3G devices drain their batteries more quickly than the older 2G ones did, but I have no problem using the 9860 all day and charging it at night. Just watch out for some third party Apps that like to run in the background and use up all your power.

Customisable alerts – The 9860 has magnetically activated in-holster out-of-holster alert options, (I use a PDair flip case which contains a magnetic activator in the flip). It also offers complete personalisation of what alerts you need, what you don’t need, and how you want to be alerted. (And there are third party apps which can change ringing profiles automatically on schedule by time of day or by calendar events). Here again the BB is, in my opinion, unbeatable.

Final thoughts – with its big (between iPhone 4 and iPhone 5 sized), bright and sharp screen, and fast processor (far faster than the old BB Curve), I have little but praise for the 9860. Just one shortcoming to mention: like older BBs, the 9860 is still subject to occasional brief freezes. I use the phone regularly as a book reader, and just very occasionally I will find myself waiting up to 30 seconds for a page turn just because the phone has ‘other things on its mind’. But it is only very occasional, so it doesn’t change my overall 5 star rating.

I have been a massive fan of blackberry for a very long time now so i simply could not turn down the opportunity to buy this phone, especially as that i have the first blackberry torch phone as well. (9800)

there really is not much to dislike about it to be honest since i have only used it for nearly a month now but it all looks pretty fine from where i am standing. for likes: the large screen is seriously amazing compared to the first one that i still have, the weight difference is incredible. So much lighter and the internet is pretty efficient whenever i use it.

It is a big improvement from the first torch itself. i would definitely get it because it is not too expensive compared to the bold 9900 which i had been trying for months to save up for.

In my opinion it is definitely way better than the current bold 9900 due to better internet and a much larger screen and the curve 9360 that is out has a lot of problems from what i have been told (most of them being technical) which made my decision for this phone a lot easier. i have tried all 3 phones beforehand, but the torch definitely beats the lot of them, only just...

i certainly made the right choice in my own opinion to stick with torch 9860 as my main phone. but personally i would get this phone as it is not too expensive.

you cannot go wrong with this phone. =)

Overall I think this phone is good, it has all the modern day blackberry features and has the bonus of being a touch screen phone. The keyboard has a slightly awkward hide keyboard button, but otherwise, there are no problems.

i have allways stuck with the iphone only because of the ipod feature but i gotta say this is equal in sound if not better not as straight forward putting music on it as the iphone and i have got to say certain apps slow it right down to the point they have to be removed not as many apps as the iphone But saying that it is a buisness phone

all in all i am very very happy with it and the seller said it was near enough new and he was right i had a great bargain

also the update to os 7.1 makes a big boom to it adding extra features and making it very quick i have to say i have my own stable yard and the iphone was very wierd with reception there but the blackberry is brill
