Vero.Includes liner notes by Jon Tiven and members of Blondie. Before Madonna's chameleon fashion aesthetic, before Riot Grrrrl's "grrrl style now" politic, Deborah Harry led Blondie. Often referred to as "she" instead of as a band, Blondie's career defied their share of obstacles. As the most commercially successful group from New York City's early punk scene, Blondie were an anomaly on their own turf. By the release of 1978's PARALLEL LINES, the band was a household name, and with that album created the most concise homage to teenagers and their love for rock'n'roll since David Bowie's ZIGGY STARDUST AND THE SPIDERS FROM MARS.THE PLATINUM COLLECTION captures how Blondie maneuvered themselves through tricky radio waves while their musical peers veered away from pop. On their self-titled debut, they rebirthed Girl Group charm with gems like "X-Offender" and "In The Flesh," while their brooding second album, PLASTIC LETTERS, affirmed Blondie's more aggressive rock leanings with "Contact In Red Square" and "Detroit 442." Once the hits started with PARALLEL LINES' "One Way Or Another," Blondie became one of the era's most successful singles machines.Evidence of Blondie's commercial prowess is obvious later in the band's career. "Heart Of Glass" was re-worked into disco from the more casual "Once I Had A Love," while the reggae cover of The Paragons' "The Tide Is High" and pop radio's first rap exposure, "Rapture" (both off of 1980's AUTOAMERICAN), showed the amazing agility of Deborah Harry's vocals and the band's literate pop sense. These songs also spotlighted the nucleus of one of the most enduring bands of the late '70s and early '80s.
