Canon PowerShot SD780 IS / Digital IXUS 100 IS

Created: 08/07/10
Hi

Bought this model because I wanted a viewfinder and small'ish camera with HD. It's great.

I paid £139 for a new model ( not refurb) rather than the 170 I've seen them at in Tesco.

I looked at reviews from various sources and must say that the quality is as stated - very good.

Not tried to output the HD video to a screen yet as there's no lead in the package ( My only gripe) but it does state that clearly in the details and I found an HD lead for under a fiver on eBay - not the £40+ charged by camera dealers.

Good little package BUT not for people with clumsy fingers.

Canon Ixus 100 IS - In depth review, function + quality

Created: 10/01/10
I have been using the Ixus 100 IS over 6 months now and previously owned a Sony Cybershot T10 and a Nikon D80 amongst others.

This is what I can say about build and image quality:

-There are not manual controls for aperture or shutter. You are restricted to the automatic modes and as such the longest exposure possible is I think just over a second or two.

-The battery drains EXTREMELY quickly, I recommend getting a backup battery. Shots only last about 120 pictures or so including reviewing etc.

-The camera has an all aluminium body except the battery storage compartment which is plastic.

-Image quality is good, obviously nowhere near that of a digital SLR but for a compact is acceptible - just don't zoom 100% or you will see lots of noise.

-The auto smile shutter release function (whereby the cam automatically takes a shot when you smile into the camera) works 20% of the time at best.

-For HD recordings I recommend an SDHC card (more than 2GB memory card) of class 4 and over (class 6 is best) so the cam can record video without any stutter.

-No wideangle lens.

-The Ixus 200 IS and the Ixus 120 IS are both a LOT bigger in terms of overall body size and you don't really get any benefits apart from touchscreen (Ixus 200 IS) or 5x Zoom instead of 3x (Ixus 120 IS). I completely recommend the Ixus 100 out of the 3 of them, if not for the size alone. It is even slimmer than Sony's T-series of cameras!

In summary, the Canon Ixus 100 IS is a very small, stylish compact digital camera that's squarely aimed at the casual party-goer or non-tech savvy. It will take good clear pictures.

Good Camera with plenty of features

Created: 01/11/09
The camera has some impressive features it is a 12mp camera my previous camera was also a Canon 4mp and I was happy with it but this model is far superior it is smaller and has a feel of quality about it, some excellent features and I saved a hundred pounds on its high street price by buying it on e-bay. The photo's are sharp and the camera is simple to use. the software with it is quite basic but it's all I need I am a point and shoot photographer but If you are into the additional features there are loads of them in this model

perfect little point and shoot

Created: 14/09/09
I have a Canon DSLR which I take with me when I am in 'photographer mode'- This usually involves a conscious decision though - since it's not much use pretending you don't have a camera with you with it swinging around your neck. I also have a canon G9 which is also an excellent camera I wouldn't be without it, the G9 is less obtrusive and the one I tend to take out on days out ( just in case ) or holidays, but the G9 is still quite bulky. Both these cameras seem to announce 'I'm here to take photographs' which is not always appropriate of course

I needed a camera that I could slip in a pocket anytime. This ixus 100is camera fits the bill. it is tiny but performs well, I tried a lumix dmc-fx500 from panasonic , it is a lovely camera and it has a lot more 'bells and whistles' than the ixus, but I found its auto mode to be too sluggish for me- the whole point of carrying a point and shoot as far as I am concerned is to catch those spontaneous moments - I found that quite often the scene had moved on by the time the Lumix got around to taking the picture. That isn't the case with this ixus, what it does it does well, response times seem excellent, colors are sharp as are the photo's I've taken so far. The flash although tiny seems to do the job well and image stabilisation in conjunction with the hi ISO settings mean really decent shots can be taken in poorish light with quite good results. The camera itself is well made and robust ( as has been mentioned by others - it does have that 'wow' factor ).

also it takes high definition video - the results of which quite frankly are astounding from something this tiny - its as if the videos were taken using a dedicated camcorder - downside is you cant zoom while recording like some others - but for the odd 'video snapshot' it is perfect

This is the camera I have been waiting for - only too often in recent times have I been out and about with pictures worth taking and no camera to do it with
