Review for: Canon EOS 40D 10.1 MP Digital SLR Camera - Black (Body Only)
Seven years since the EOS D30, the sixth incarnation of that camera displays all of the advantages of a progressive evolution in both features and quality. With each step up the evolutionary ladder to the EOS 40D Canon has demonstrated improvements in image quality, performance, usability and features. They also demonstrated that as well as meeting the 'requirements of the market' they also listened to owners and reviewers by implementing the most commonly requested feature changes. With the EOS 40D these include permanent display of ISO sensitivity on both the top LCD and viewfinder status bar, the warning message with the CF compartment is opened during a write process and the addition of the AF-ON button.

From an image quality point of view the combination of the Canon CMOS sensor and DIGIC III processor means equally detailed images at all sensitivities (except maybe ISO 3200), low noise and a complete lack of unnatural artifacts. The new high ISO speed noise reduction option has no effect on luminance detail but removes any lingering chroma noise , giving high ISO images a more film-like grain; something Nikon has been doing for some time. We would be interested to see Canon using a less strong anti-alias filter which would mean that JPEG images would require less sharpening and would be naturally 'crisper' straight off the sensor, but it's a minor point and would really only be seen by 'pixel peepers'.

One surprise came from our testing of the cameras dynamic range, it delivered a consistently higher range than both the competition and its predecessor. The majority of this improvement, however, was in the shadow range, a function we presume of the new 14-bit processing pipeline.

Negatives? We're always more critical of cameras such as the EOS 40D, which come with such a strong heritage, but even with that in mind it's truly difficult to find any serious issues. Automatic white balance in artificial light is still pretty poor, there's no indication of the tone curve applied by different Picture Styles and continuous shooting speed wasn't quite as fast as specified, but really, we’re splitting hairs here.

When I first started using the EOS 40D a simple description came to mind: that this is a 'well sorted camera'. It feels well rounded - the result of years of evolutionary improvement, it delivers in almost every area, and it inspires confidence. From a usability point of view the viewfinder feels larger, ergonomics are good, the user interface is clear and easy to learn, there are no in-use performance issues, metering and auto-focus show good consistency and the results speak for themselves; colorful (yet accurate) detailed images with low noise even at high sensitivities.

Conclusion - Cons

Average automatic white balance performance, still very poor under incandescent light
Picture Style tone curve not indicated in camera menu (contrast is an offset, not absolute)
Continuous shooting rate slower than specified, 6 fps @ 1/500 sec, 6.3 fps @ 1/4000 sec
No contrast detect AF in Live View
Flash must be up for AF assist lamp (although AF is good even in low light)
Virtually pointless print button, should be customizable 'FUNC' button
No mass storage USB support (although pretty fast WIA throughput)

Review for: Canon EOS 40D 10.1 MP Digital SLR Camera - Black (Body Only)
I am now 43. From the age of 14 I have been using cameras and been into Photography. I was in the photographic retail trade from the age of 16 up to 32 years old. I can tell you this about the 40D, this camera ROCKS. Semi pro- serious Amateur photographer, even a second camera for a Pro or a Pro with smaller Budget. This camera's build quality is Amazing. The weight is perfect, yes it is not light, but in a good way. An SLR camera for a serious user should NOT be too light, for balance and comfort. The other thing to point out with this camera, (like the 50d which from what I understand is the same, just 15mp instead of 10.1) is the quality of the build not only of the cast body, and skin, but the switches , dials front grip cog and rear wheel cog (for menu,Aperture ,shutter speed changing)these parts of the camera are superb in their build quality,I have upgraded now to the 60d, due mainly to the rotating screen, which I need and miss from using my old Lumix G1 camera. I am pleased with the 60d as a whole, but the 40d felt better to hold, and the knobs, dials, switches felt like they will last for ever, where as on my 60d, maybe not . If I did not need an EOS with the rear dial and rotating screen, I would have kept the 40d or got the 50d. This cameras Frames per second is stunning ideal for sports and wildlife Photography. As usual with EOS's mid to higher range cameras the famous EOS AF tracking is superb, better with canons own lenses as the distance between the min and max focus is only a short travel distance on the barrel thus the focus on the mid range and L lenses will blow you away. NOTE also the 40d (and maybe 50d also) have got the FLASH SYNC socket on the side, my eos 60D has not (thankfully this does not affect my photography as I'm outdoor Photographer mainly and not a studio man) But worth noting if you thinking of upgrading later on, you may have to jump to the 7D ! The aps-c sensor with auto dust cleaning is great and of course you have to x the focal length of the lens you are using by 1.6 so a 17-85 will be just slightly over 27mm to 136 (in old 35mm film terms) and 18-55 would be just under 29 to 88mm, and a 100-300 will be 160mm to 480 mm ! great for telephoto zoom, but you lose out a little on wide angle...where with full frame like the eos 5D you would get just what it says on the tin (or lens) Make no mistake the eos 40D like it's brother the 50D is a camera you should NOT worry about performing well. AND it will LAST you! JUST BUY IT! You will not regret it. Check out the Photographic site FLCKR and search for the tags EOS 40D to see what people have taken with it. That site is also IDEAL for when you want to see what the lens you are considering will do (check in the tags of the photo to see what camera it was on as that can factor into the results too! ) ENJOY!

Review for: Canon EOS 40D 10.1 MP Digital SLR Camera - Black (Body Only)
Having become very interested in bird photography, especially of birds in flight, had bought a Canon 10D from eBay, which had proved rather too slow for the purpose, upgraded to a 20D, again from eBay, this was much faster and lighter, but still a little slow and with too small a buffer.
After reading reviews about other Canon models I bought a 40D, which is a considerable jump in performance over the 20D, although only going from 8 to 10 megga pixcesl. The capabilities, setting and performance are now adequate for capturing reasonable shots of birds in flight, need more practice, the additional features, increased screen size, sensor cleaning and a shutter life of 100,000, make this a great performer for my preferred photography.
So if you are looking for a reasonablly priced DSLR for action photography, this is a very good choice.

Review for: Canon EOS 40D 10.1 MP Digital SLR Camera - Black (Body Only)
Fantastic body for the very keen enthusiast or part-time professional. Viewfinder is so much larger and brighter than a 550D I had previously. Operation of the controls is so intuitive and the body itself (a magnesium alloy) feels very 'solid' and durable. I use this for both landscapes, where the ultra low noise 3in screen and image quality are great; and for weddings part time where the fast, accurate focus and excellent metering system means I only have to worry about the shot, not whether my camera is capable.

I should note that I use this with a Sigma 10-20mm EX DC for my landscape work and bits of the weddings; a sigma F1.4 30mm for portraits and a Canon 18-135 IS STM for a general purpose walkaround lens.

For the money (I paid £210 for my 40D body on eBay) there is not a camera out there to beat it for anyone serious about photography.

Review for: Canon EOS 40D 10.1 MP Digital SLR Camera - Black (Body Only)
I'm an 'enthusiast' photographer with little talent and even less money :)

I have this camera for about two weeks now.

It replaces my 400D which will go to my daughter.

I had the 400D for a few years and was still learning how to use it and get the best out of it.
While 400D is a great camera (I have some lovely images from it) I felt the urge to upgrade.

After a LOT of research I decided to go for a 40D.
(Had considered 500D to 650D and 50D and even older 5D's).

Getting it at the right price took a while, but finally it arrived.

Right from the moment I held the camera it felt like a quantum leap in gear.

It's going to take a long time to get the full potential out of this camera.
It's packed with excellent 'pro level' functions and I have already made a few mistakes (like setting the ISO to 3200 for all the photos I took while away for my wedding aniversary! DPP saved many images).

So, what do I NOT like about it?

- Auto ISO (seems to always choose fairly high ISO)
- It doesn't do video (but then I knew that :) )

What do I like?

- Build quality
- Ergonomics (which at first were annoying but make so much sense now)
- Speed
- Quality of image (it IS better than the 400D though it has the same sensor)
- It works well with ALL my lenses. (One of my EF lenses hunts for focus on teh 400D but works well with the 40D)
- Creative potential
- Customisability (through menus)
- Spot metering
- Option for 6.5 fps!
- Very useable 1600 ISO
- The list goes on!

Prices second hand are starting to rise quickly.
I understand why!
