At last a pull out TFT on a Canon SLR

    Created: 25/12/10
The camera performed very well on a recent trip to Central America, combined with a 70-200mm IS lens it produced excellent photographs. Only one slight problem is it's high ASA performance. After using a Canon 5D Mk2 for almost two years I have come to expect low noise even at 1600 ASA, in the right conditions. The 60D showed more noise at high ASA settings, although given the fact that the sensor is much smaller this is to be expected. Up to 800-1000 ASA it still performed well, but shooting in RAW is sensible so that any noise can be tweaked in Elements (or the Canon software) before conversion to Jpeg. For c£800 it is very good value.

Having been a keen user of my old EOS 450D I had absolutely no idea what I was letting myself in for when I took the plunge and treated myself to the 60D in March. The difference between the two is awesome, don't get me wrong the 450 will always be with me, an ideal spare or a great camera for the kids to use, but the 60D, that's my baby. Being as I had upgraded from another Canon model the lenses that I had previously aquired all had the same fit and so saved a lot of money on having to replace them and instead I am able to carry on using the same gear as I have for a long time. Initially and at first use it is a daunting piece of equipment, even after using the 450 I thought I may have a good idea as to what it can and cannot do but this is in a different league. First and foremost, if you are simply a keen photographer that wants to point and shoot everything do not buy this, because the auto mode although adequate is probably the worst feature on this camera, no, with this you have to do a lot of homework and be prepared to use the manual and semi auto functions. Do this and I can promise you not only some good results but nothing less than outstanding, I spent 3-4 months trialing it and getting used to it then in August I took it to Greece and used it in anger and, well, the results are stunning, I am so pleased with the images I obtained, and after publishing some the feedback has been incredible, nothing less than positive and good comments. Whether you choose to do Macro or distance photography this camera will cope quite easily and with the high ISO setting taking night shots now is an absolute doddle, I was able to take imges at relatively no light, using no flash and yet came away with crisp, clear images, and because no flash was used the atmosphere of the shots are beautiful, on most night shots a tripod was still required but even so the images are a welcome view from some of the normal flashed ones taken before. Also the standard 18-55mm lens that comes with it is also more than adequate for general shooting and a tip, add a decent polarising filter and voila, incredibly clear, sharp and highly coloured shots abound, and even without any gimmicks the lens focuses remarkably quick and again provides clear sharp images. I decided this year to try some high speed shooting and again, this did not dissapoint, in the sport mode with the multi shot function enabled it can quite easily rile of 15 shots within a couple of seconds with pin sharp clarity. Again, you have to do some homework, the SD card required is of the SDHC variety, and these are not cheap, and do not consider anything less than a class 10 card, it is a cost that you are not made aware of until after you have purchased the camera so shop around, I found the 64gb card a bit too expensive and settled for the 32gb and again it is more than adequate for still shooting in all modes and being a class 10 card the transfer times to your computer even in full RAW mode is minimal. If I were interested in the video facility then obviously a 64 gb card would be required, but, for the meantime I am quite happy with the 32gb that I have. I also use the cannon 70 -250mm zoom lens and combined with this camera they make an incredible pairing if you are into landscapes. Again I cannot fault it and cannot recommend it enough, the only problem I have is that his camera has beaten my abilities and so I am going to invest in some good guides/books forums to find how to get more from it

Excellent Semi Pro DSLR with superb build quality and battery life.

I purchased this as an upgrade for my EOS 1100D as I have a number of EF-S lenses and didn't want to have to go to the expense of having to replace them if I bought a full frame sensor EOS model. The build quality is excellent with the body being weather sealed, The menu system is intuitive and offers an extraordinary level of creative control. Image quality is excellent and the sensor performs well in most lighting conditions, The 60D also offers a reasonably high continuous frame rate over 5fps. Battery life is very good I'm currently averaging 1000 shots on a charge. The addition of a flip out screen also allows for some very creative angles of shooting. My only gripes are that the flip out screen cannot be fitted with a glass screen protector a favourite accessory of mine because it will not close afterwards and that the eye cup could stand a little clearer of the body but these are trivial issues. I would highly recommend this camera to anyone looking towards a high end DSLR especially if they are trading up from a lower model and have any EF-S lenses that they wish to continue using.

First impressions of the Canon EOS 60D

    Created: 18/11/10
Canon EOS 60D will be my third digital camera from Canon. Having now tried the camera in a week, I note that it is just as good as I expected. I like:
    1st The high picture quality.
2nd The high quality feeling it conveys.
4th The improved logic of function buttons' location and function.
3rd Filming in HD. It is my first SLR that can be shot in HD quality but it requires quite a bit of education and training to be really successful, but the film quality could probably not get much better.

Overall, a very powerful camera that corresponds well to my high expectations.

A great 'prosumer' upgrade or with Magic Lantern, a great semi-pro camera.

I bought this as an upgrade from the 550D which I'd owned for 2 years. I used it for filming mostly and had Magic Lantern installed.
I upgraded to this due to having A) not enough cash for a 7D and B)100+GB of SDHC/XC cards which the 7D couldn't use.
The swivel screen is my favourite function for both filming and stills, allowing much more difficult shooting angles than before, and the secondary LCD on the grip made shooting in low light much simpler.
It's got a good weight to it but isn't so heavy as to wear your arm out. It focuses nice and quickly too.
