Canon Legria HG10 40 GB Camcorder - Silver

Very good picture quality, almost 10 hours of HD recording available on 40 Gb HDD. I particularly wanted this model for the viewfinder, many new cameras have LCD screen only - no good in bright sunlight!!
A few minus points:
Bit heavy on battery consumption, I have bought a spare.
Battery life does not show in hours/minutes, only a graduated symbol.
Cannot record movies to the mini SD card.
Max SD card size (according to Canon) is 2 Gb.
Accessories pricey.
I haven't loaded any of the software, but it doesn't get good press. I transfer photos manually, and record DVD's using my DVD recorder but cannot keep the HD format when doing so. HD playback can be done easily from the camera straight into TV using mini HDMI out.

This was bought to replace a troublesome Sony mini DV camcorder, it is streets ahead in terms of quality and build, so would recommend it.

I gave the camera a average rating because 1. The small battery gives you about 1 hour of use. 2. The zoom button broke and the camera is a bit on the heavy side. Im no expert but the camera is easy to use. 1. Canon quality is there to be seen when filming and the still image photo is good stuff. The camera was a demo model i knew that but what i did not know was a rep had been using it. The camera has gone back to the retailer. Wish i went to a major retailer now.

I bought this camcorder because I needed to replace my old Mini DV camcorder. I chose this camcorder primarily because of the large sensor size, hoping that it would perform well in low light, which it does.
It's not the smallest camcorder in the world, but this is a good thing, as it is easier to hold steady.
The optical image stabiliser is not quite as good as Panasonic's, but does quite well.
Having a 40GB hard drive means you don't have to worry about having a card or tapes free to use.
My only real criticism of this camcorder is the audio quality from the on board microphone, it's quite hissy and not as loud as it could be.

This a good camera for any film making enthusiast. I would not recomend this camera for anyone who just wants to point and shoot, they would get lost with the settings, hard to edit footage with the file format it records in. Without a decent PC to handle the AVCHD HD files, you will struggle and be disapointed.

The Canon HG10 can be bought at a decent price and its worth the money. This camera is aimed more for the enthusiast. If your thinking about a Camera thats good enough for making films ect, HD, decent features, reasonable price, then this one is for you.

Forget about tapes, this hard drive Canon has 40Gb storage, enough for anyone's fortnight's holiday without downloading: you've still got to edit the stuff. It's built to usual Canon robust standards and will produce bright, sharp, lively photos under most conditions. Would recommend buying the DM-50 extrenal mic for greatly improved clarity. Personally I also try and use a tripod indoors or monopod while out walking : I go to the Alps and the lightweight is a boon. Use with Premiere Elements 7 (not 8 yet) and you'll have great fun and results. (Costs just £60 for a pretty advanced programme). You'll need extra batteries: I bought a non OEM one for £20 which will run for 4 extra hours. I took up videoing 12 months ago and can now produce 50 minute videos without boring the neighbours to perfectly acceptable standards: it's very addictive. It's a very simple yet advanced camcorder that will produce virtual broadcast standards. I'm told the Beeb use these in war zones as it's not so conspicuous and not a disaster if one gets dropped or shot. Buy one.
