Product description

Description
Speedlite 550EX is the main component of a new flash system designed together with the EOS-3 SLR camera. It provides full compatibility with the new area AF technology employed by the EOS-3 and refined E-TTL autoflash for improved performance. Other main features include a maximum guide number of 180 (ISO 100, ft.), an AF-assist beam which links to the EOS-3's 45-point area AF, FP Flash (high-speed sync), FE lock (a flash version of AE lock), and FEB (Flash Exposure Bracketing). The Speedlite 550EX also incorporates a built-in wireless transmitter, which can control other Speedlite 550EX units set up as slave units. Flash coverage is set automatically from 24mm to 105mm, and a wide-angle panel extends the coverage to 17mm. The Speedlite runs on 4 AA-size batteries, and can also be used with optional external power supplies such as Compact Battery Pack E and Transistor Pack E. Recycling times are faster than those experienced with the Speedlite 540EZ.

Released in 1998/1999 this was once a top of the range flash so used prices are often higher than expected. Ideal for use with 1st generation Canon digital cameras as it supports E-TTL. Fairly heavy to carry all day but flash power provides pleasing results once a few test shots have been taken. Worked without issue on Canon EOS 1D (MK1). Plenty of settings can be made though its a shame that some of the settings require two buttons to be pushed together and they are too recessed to make it an easy task.

Moving the flash head up, down or sideways requires separate button pushes which are equally fiddly as is gaining access to the battery compartment. If this flash supports your camera then it is feasible to to use it in Auto right away without having to consult the manual. It is worth reading the manual to get the most of the flash. This flash does look a little odd on an EOS 300D but is a massive improvement over the built in which washes everything out...

Its large and heavy so a 430EX may be a better choice if some of the more advanced features of the 550EX are not required. The 550 EX can act as a controller for wireless control of other flashes such as the 430EX.

A used speedlite 550ex represents a good economical alternative to a 580ex. Particularly if you're interested in off camera flash as you can afford two of them (when watching for a good bargain on ebay) for the price of a used 580exII. With quite as many features. It has a dedicated switch to activate slave mode without entering rather complicated menus its successors have.
Works on all Canon dslr and very well with remote triggers like the phottix odin. It can also be powered by an external battery pack of the same type as the 580 series.

I bought this product to be a step up from my 480EX, for more power. I bought it second hand and paid a very reasonable price for it. To buy a 580 would be a huge amount more.

I've been very pleased with the lighting results from this product, the power is noticably greater than the 480, as you'd hope. The size/weight increase hasnt been a problem. However, it's very much slower than the 480 to do the initial first charge, the recycle time inst bad but is slower also.

My biggest issue is that the tilt and swivel are two different mechanisms, so it's less speedy and more awkward to adjust. It serves as a useful additional flash, and I will keep it to be a backup, but I will definitely be saving up to by the 580 in the near future.

Excellent for off-camera use especially with a sync port mod for wireless radio as against wireless infra-red operation (Canon's system is infra-red). With the radio, flashes can be placed anywhere for creative lighting effects. Contact me if you want a quote for fitting of sync socket.
