Best part about this drill is the chuck supplied on a DC988.
The chuck supplied on these drills is an all-metal ratcheting chuck. Great for using taps for threading holes (M3 - M12 sizes), as the ratchet action (when cranked up) does not let the tap (or Drill-bit) slip at all. Better grip than most keyed chucks that I've tried.
Which, when added with the spindle lock (brake) makes for really easy bit change, and really easy to get a good grip on the drill bit.
I've found that these chucks are only supplied on the DC988. Dont be fooled into buying another dewalt 18v model as they have inferior keyless chucks. (Well the ones I have tried anyway - i've not tried them all!)
Forward/Reverse switch is in a convenient location for single handed operation.
Torque is better than most other drills (anything that will allow you to quickly fire an M10 tap into an 8mm hole in 2mm thick sheet steel is good enough for me.
Variable trigger also comes in handy for precise jobs.
Unfortunately - dewalt have now discontinued this model from production. My advice is - if you're in the market for an 18v cordless, and you will be using it for drilling and tapping - GET ONE WHILE YOU CAN!
If you only require a drill for drilling, or screwdrivering purposes - there are plenty of other cheaper alternatives that will do the job just fine.

) I bought this drill to replace my Black & Decker which I had for several years but the batteries were starting to die.I first noticed how easy to fit a drill bit, one handed. I was drilling through a 12" wall and was amazed how easy it went through. Although it was second hand there was not a mark on it and came with 2 2.6 AH batteries. I was so pleased with the Dewalt brand I have bought a circular saw and a jigsaw as they use the same batteries.

This is the Second one of these Drill I Drills I have purchased, I can "Rate" them as a very good Drill,
Unfortuately "De-Walt" have Stopped making this model,
They accept "All" 3 types of batteries, that are available,
If you see one, DC988 Type12,
Just buy it,
You wont be Dissapointed

) It does not work properly, it has the same chuck problem as the one it was supposed to replace. So I wish I had not won the bloody thing in the first place!

I am very happy with this purchase this was to be a backup for my other Dewalt drill but has it happens the other drill is now backup for this one because this one seems to perform better
