Elf (DVD 2004)

An uncanny gift for physical comedy helps Will Ferrell propel this festive family movie along, even though it's barely more than a string of sketches held together by a conventional plot.

His giant-among-elves character first amuses with his mere size, but in New York he's an outcast of a different kind: a wide-eyed, relentlessly cheerful child in a man's body whose elf-talk convinces everyone he's a nutjob.

The gags swing between mildly inventive and screamingly obvious, but even the latter are performed and timed well enough to draw a laugh. The plot, however, is so overshadowed by comic set-pieces that its ending fails to deliver the emotional impact it should. And it doesn't help that the supporting characters are either overexposed (we see far too much of Buddy's father at his work, for example) or underdeveloped (love interest Jovie is likeable but sidelined).

"Great Film"

When i was bought this film i thought it was going to be rubbish but i was very suprised, from the begining to the end its great, buddy the human elf is brought up from being a baby with tiny elfs, he looks so funny making the christmas toys or sitting at a school desk, he looks 7ft tall compared to the other elfs of about 3ft. Buddy leaves and because he loves cuddles he offers one to a racoon that does not want one and then it spits and attacks buddys neck, so funny! Buddy goes to new york to find his real father but his dad thinks he is a crazed man in a elfs outfit, buddy does not understand rejection and continues to pester his real dad and his family, great ending and the dwarf scene is great. Will farell at his best, a feel good movie for a lovely christmas

I love the film elf and recently saw a group on facebook about it. I enjoyed watched it on tv at christmas but never had it to own on dvd so i thought i'd buy it off Ebay. Im glad i did and now i can watch it back as many times as i like :)

Elf is about a human baby abandoned into an orphanage, that then crawls into santa sack back to lapland.
He is then brought up by the chief elf ,only to return to his homeland after he realises he is different from the other elves ( by about 6 feet!)
and has a father he can trace.
An hilarious journey for Buddy (human)in his quest for a family..
definitely a christmas ritual for the whole family.
Will Ferrell is amazing in this part, so pick yourself a copy for this years festive holiday

i bought elf on video, a couple of years ago, it was so good i just had to get it on dvd. this is a brilliant christmas dvd that brings a warm and happy feeling as soon as you watch it. i would definately recommend it to any person of any age. brilliant dvd 5/5.
