Best GPS ever

This is my third Garmin GPS receiver. The first was a Garmin GPS II - a 6 channel job in the early days of GPS when the dither caused by Selective Availability reduced accuracy to 100 metres.
The second was an Etrex, which is fairly good but the short aerial affects receiver sensitivity. At home, I have to dangle it out of the window on a broom handle to get it to lock on and it recently let me down in a heavily wooded deep valley.
The 60CSx has a much longer aerial (see picture) and the receiver is excellent. It locks on to the satellites when sitting inside the house 2 metres from the nearest window - brilliant. Walking in that same heavily wooded deep valley it did not skip a beat.
The unit comes with a 256mb MicroSD card, which might hold one map. I've installed an 8GB MicroSD card, which currently holds a collection of 12 maps of various types (about 2.9GB). It is not possible to swap maps on the hoof. The 60CSx seeks just one map from this collection - the one named "gmapsupp.img". To change maps, you need to plug the unit into a PC to copy the required map into the "garmin" folder, which is a bit fiddly. The internal map is good for general use around Europe.
Battery life is great - about 18 hours on two AA rechargeable NiMH batteries - as good as the Etrex, if not better, considering the colour screen and map processing on the 60CSx. You can get a GPS app. for your smartphone but it's no good for UK walkers or boat owners - it's not waterproof for a start and nowhere near as robust.

This is the bees knees of GPSs. I've handled a variety of models as a hobby buyer-and-seller of GPSs, and the CSX is the best I have ever had.

Pros:
* Solid as a rock. The one weak point is the rubber-encased button on the top, which wears thru if you have long fingernails.
* Incredibly sensitive. I live on the ground floor of an apartment block, yet it tracks me inside the building.
* Size and weight. A criticism somethime levelled at it is the the relative bulkiness of the item, but I find this and advantage, especially in cold weather when the hands and fingers do not manage the smaller units so well.
* Price. 300+ pounds (500+ dollars) when launched, but now pick-upable for under 100 if you hunt around.

Cons:
* None really, it's pretty good. My one quibble is that the four-way central button is frustrating at times, not always responding well. A joystick such as on a Venture Cx would have been better.
* Display is 256 colours, so not photo quality. On the other hand, having walked in freezing weather with watering eyes, I prefer the primary colours of the CSX.

Conclusion:
* This is the GPS Harrods would sell you (if it was still available). It's been replaced by the GPS62, Etrex 20 & 30, etc. These have equally impressive performance, but at the same time have a more 'plastic' or 'toy' feel. The CSX simply was, and still is, excellent.

Very pleased to buy this on ebay

I wanted a GPS 60 csx for walking holidays. I was not prepared to pay over £200 for a new one and then another 200 for the software. I bought a used one for around £180 with topo GB and city navigator on the micro flash card. It works perfectly, and cheap to run on batteries since I bought Ennimon rechargeables, also on e bay.
I saved myself over £200 and have exactly what I want. OK, so warranty might be an issue, we`ll see.

Excellent all-round unit. Whether navigating the bush or doing a bit of Geo-caching, pretty easy to use (once you get used to it, as with anything!). Clear display and a host of great features. The only thing that lets this down is the exorbitant cost of additional maps/etc!
