Garmin Oregon 550t is tops!!!
This is the best handheld GPS anyone can buy at this moment in time. I am relatively new at hiking, and my orienteering skills limited - but when I acquired the Garmin 550t unit, I felt like I have grown wings. The whole of the UK was my oyster. Gone was my anxiety. It is very easy to use even for a first time user. The capacity of the Oregoen is enormous, but you can use as little of it as you grow with it. It is impossible to lose yourself. I have used mine in The Lakes in thick mist and driving rain and wind; and the unit stood the challenge and got me back down safely. It is so sensitive yet very rugged. I still carry my laminated maps and compass as a backup; and after one year's use, I still have to open any of my paper maps. I use the pre-loaded Discoverer map on SD. It is the best investment I have made in years when it comes to hiking. I fully recommend the garmin oregon 550t.

Oregon 550t - great outdoor handheld gps
If money is not the first concern when buying such a thing, you will find that this one is probably the best handheld GPS money can buy. It is indeed on the expensive side, but it does a lot and much more than you would need.
The topo maps give you a good orientation in the field, the compass (outside occasional calibration errors) is very accurate and it displays not only the geographical direction of North, South, etc but where you should be heading for your destination or alternately where you should be heading to get back on course. One could write a very long review of the Garmin Oregon 550t and there are other much more in-depth reviews doing that - describing in detail what it does. All the features are mostly positive ones, the only real issue is to find out how many of these features you really need, because you do pay a significant amount for them. However, if money isn't such a problem, or if you really desire it, you will most likely be very satisfied with it.
It has happened to me that it got me interested in some features for which i wouldn;t have gotten this GPS but actually one that didn't have those features (geocaching for one). But it's built so well and functions so smoothly that it really is a pleasure to take it out and use it.
So, if you do get it, you will certailny enjoy it!

garmin oregon 550t
Yes this is a top end GPS unit. It dose everything it says on the box.
I will say first that I already owen a cheaper garmin unit the legend htc. the switch from one to the other took a bit of getting use to. there is far more app's on the oregon. The oregon is as I've said a great unit, but if I was a first time buyer, I wouldn't buy it, I would buy one of the cheaper garmins like the legend htc. I couldn,t fault it. This would get for a new-be used to using a GPS basic with out all the knobs and a bells as they say.
The only problem I've had with the Oregon 550t so far, was one link up with the Geocaching.com web site. to down load some cache information, this was soon sorted through the garmin site, which is very helpful. It's great now to be able to go out Geocaching and only have to carry two items, one the GPS unit and two a pen. Not as it was doing a juggling act, with a GPS unit, pen, paper, camera and other items. Now it paper free caching, as the unit stores all the information from the web site. And a added bonus the unit has a built in camera.
this is a small compact gps unit, works well in the daylight. light and clear screen this is the best version to buy as it includes the maps and if you wanted a camera, fairly basic though. so e-bay has the best prices but do shop around you can save a lot of money.
