HTC Desire

Created: 08/11/10
Delighted with my 1st smartphone - a gizmo I had imagined for years - I've had 2 ipaq hand helds with gps [with a dire battery life which eventually dies completely...and takes tom tom maps along with it].I always had to have 3 pieces of kit plus chargers in my bag. I now have my music, gps, phone and internet access as well as a camera in one piece of kit. Joy. I am still discovering what it is capable of so far it is fast gives speedy access to the internet, holds my music and has a clear and v sensitive screen. [I have upgraded to a 16gb memory card.]It works fine as a phoneas it should.

The one I bought via ebay was an 'unwanted upgrade' and is the orange model which I do curse a bit as orange always pops up. [I looked into 'rooting' it but decided I'm not enough of a techie to risk that and now wish I'd gone for a sim free unlocked model - there were plenty available but as I already had an orange contract...and it is matte black which I like [hmm - but with a little orange square on the back.]It is neat and not too bulky - smaller than an iphone

The battery life is an issue, as most buyers mentioned, but I can now get 2-3 days per charge depending on use. I did the [thanks to another user] recommended overnight charge before starting. I read a lot of reviews of my prospective buys and got tips such as remembering to turn off gps and blue tooth when not in use. I do leave it -so far- entirely on 2G using wifi to access the internet and would definitely recommend this for setting up because it is quicker [it tells you that when downloading]and cheaper/free-ish if you already have wifi access - and lots of public places do now too.

The set-up was so easy it was a joy to watch as it rattled through my contacts, made links with my e-mail directory and facebook. Orange does seem to intervene with email messages which I'm sure isn't necessary - but not annoying enough for me to try to tackle it -yet. I've just got firefox sync -beta- which was great as I saw instantly where I'd last been searching on the desktop and everything from other computers was there BUT it seems to have reduced them to the lowest common denominator/simplest so I suddenly lost a great chunk of my contacts. Beware.

I'm pleased with the camera, which wasn't a high priority - definitely less digital lag than the sony ericsson this replaces. Also happy with the selection of apps from market but those I've chosen are pretty utilitarian: BBC news, newspapers, google earth, the sky at night, bar code rea - no games. Nor am I comparing it with an i-phone or former smartphone.

I've barely experimented with the gps though it did an instant picture of the outside of our v rural house-really impressive. [I gather that orange 3G have their own maps which requires 2 sattelite accesses to give directions which slows it down] I was also told that £50 will download an all time edition of European maps - again can't comment, but I have downloaded the free googlemaps available from market, which showed where I was walking in fields. The voice is robotic -not the polite and well spoken Tom Tom woman. My son's Desire was used in the car - he's a gps sceptic, with excellent map reading skills, and he was impressed with the result - especially as we were in the Lake District among the mountains at the time. It certainly did the job.

I have dithered between excellent and good. Maybe that's down to orange. It is a very good phone with which I'm delighted.

Hi my name’s Andrew,
I don't usually do these sort of things, writing reviews that is, but I have been so impressed with this phone. I've put a summary of details first, and then a more detailed analysis.

Special Features
**MULTI-TASKING** < The major plus point over it's main competitor the iPhone
Automatically lowers the ringer volume as soon as the phone is picked up
Mutes the ringer when the phone is flipped face down
Backs up certain data and settings to the microSD card automatically, such as SMS/MMS messages, bookmarks, Wi-Fi passwords, and more

VOTED THE BEST CURRENT MOBILE PHONE IN THE WORLD BY TechRadar (iPhone 3GS was 2nd)

Things I Love/Pros:
3.7-inch AMOLED capacitive touchscreen (looks absolutely stunning, great for watching movies and is also very responsive)
Contacts social integration (each contact can include; phone, email, home/work address, facebook, twitter and much more)
Weather widgets (clouds spread across screen when it's cloudy, raindrops are cleared off the screen by a windscreen wiper when it's raining!)
Free SatNav with Google Maps (only available on phones operating Android)
Customisation (7 home screens and hundreds of widgets/shortcuts)

Niggles/Cons:
No apps to SD card (may be overcome with future Android update)
Having to press power button at the top of the phone to wake screen (fixed with apps from Market or future updates)
No hot swapping of memory cards i.e. swapping cards without turning phone off)
**********************************************************************************

Now, if you're reading this section, then you've probably already decided you want this phone, but just need a little encouragement to go out and buy it.

Messaging
Full QWERTY keyboard at your fingertips, and even if you do type in the wrong word it has an uncanny ability to know what you were trying to type and enters it for you!

Internet
In my opinion the Desire is one of, if not the best phone on the market for web browsing. You can have 4 pages/windows open at once, flash, bookmarks, history plus much more. It's basically the same as browsing from a laptop/PC, which is just what you want.
The text reflow is incredible and makes reading web pages effortless (text reflow is when you zoom in, the text automatically adjusts to fit your screen, therefore removing the need to scroll from left to right to left all day to read the page).
The phone also supports flash and can therefore load videos and other web content that other phones can't (although a bit hit and miss at the moment which should be fixed with the next Android update)

Camera
5MP camera with LED flash is more than adequate for a phone. Video capture is also better than expected and future Android updates are expected to improve it further, possibly even to HD

Applications
Although the app Market is not as big as Apple’s, you have to remember that it is still in its infancy. Having said that, there are plenty of apps to keep you busy and with the possibility of apps to SD card in the future it means larger and better apps will become available.
One thing it does have over Apple is the 24 hour refund policy. When you buy an app, you can simply refund it within 24 hours if you don’t like it (applies once per app)

Summary:
I've had the phone for just over 4 weeks now and it seems every day I am finding something new. It does everything an iPhone can and costs much less, so seems a no brainer really. I also forget to mention this thing can make calls too!
