Excellent upgrade for an old pc...
Created: 05/04/11
I have an old pc with AGP8x slot that I didn't want to replace because it has the parallel port that I still need for a specific application. At first it had the Pentium 4/3.0Ghz CPU, which was very slow in "heavy" applications like InDesign, Photoshop etc. And there was no chance at all to play high definition files like Blu-ray with that CPU without the help of a very strong graphic card.
So I replaced the CPU about one year ago with Dual Core E6450/2,13Ghz and the upgrade was huge. It was very easy to run big files in InDesign 3.0 or 4.0 or Photoshop with 2GB of RAM. But there was still something missing. The Dual Core E6450 CPU had a use of 70-90% with Powerdvd10 and Blu-ray disks with problems in motion etc.
So I made this final upgrade with Q6600/2,40Ghz Quad Core CPU which gave to me all the "horsepower" that was missing! Now I can play a Blu-ray ISO from hard disk or from disk with Powerdvd10 with low use of CPU, I can surf in the Internet and work in Design 4.0 or 5.0 at the same time! Really huge upgrade which can solve all my problems for many years...

At standard clock rates its bang for multi-processing buck is difficult to beat. The Q6600 is also the best over clocking quad processer for the 775 socket ever made. It’s an overclocker's wet dream x 4. The complete newbie should have no problem over clocking this well past later more modern quad processors like the E8400 (which cost 110-120 new). Aim to pay 60-70 pounds on ebay for the Q6600 (please don't inflate the market by offering more - be patient). If you want something better you need a new 1155 socket mobo + a 2600k processor (together over 300+ pounds) and probably new memory as well.

Runs nice and cool with the Dell Dimension 9200 Heatsink/Fan average 32º-34ºC Up to ~40ºC when running Games like COD.
Popular with Over clockers (Must have good Heatsink/fan)
Average Price on e-bay ~£65-£70 Good value, well sought after processor.

this Core 2 Quad Q6600 CPU replaced a Core 2 Duo E6550 CPU in a Dell Optiplex 755. The CPU was auto configured by the BIOS and recognized by the OS immediately. Although only 0.1Mghz faster than the previous CPU, Video conversion time has been reduced by 50%. The Quad Cores clearly make a huge difference. Everyday OS tasks have not changed. GeekBench Scores were up to 185%!

I upgraded from a e6600 on a windows 7 ultimate rig, I have a PNY GTX 460 768MB edition now my CPU was bottlenecking my graphics card. The q6600 still bottlenecks my graphics card but far less and increased my fps buy 20-30 on max settings playing on 1920x1080 games like battlefield bad company 2,Deus Ex Human revolution while playing them on max with my e6600 I was only geting an average of 30fps now battlefield is at 50/60 and Human Revolution is 40-60fps, if you don't have the funds right now i would recommend buying a quad core cpu and good after market cooler and overclocking the cpu to 3Ghz to 3.2Ghz and that will last a good year or 2 before you need to upgrade your motherboard ram and buy a new cpu, times are hard!
