Finaly a Tough Smart android phone!

Created: 23/02/11
Finaly a Smart phone that is touch screen AND will take day to day Knocks, bangs, water attacks, drops, sand, dust, mud...and guess what ya can shuv it straight in ya pocket and your stuff in your pocket WON'T activate anything as it only responds to your finger (Hence stylus would not work) but I have found I don't need one even with my fat fingers!! At first I was little surprised as I thought it was going to be a little bigger phone & screen wise, though now I'm glad as it is JUSt the right size to STILL fit into pocket and let you sit down without discomfort, and the screen size is still decent with the outer edge of the phones frame not big at all so the phone is all screen really.

This is my FIRST ANDROID phone and took a little getting used to (1-2 days) but now I LOVE it, smooth to use.I was a little peed off at first as the qwerty keyboard a little small for my large fingers, but then if you want to use a touch screen phone with good size you will HAVE to get either an iPhone or a Samsung Galaxy, which are bigger. I was surprised the system did not come with a touch number pad with T9 predictive text, but of course with android like iphone you can go shopping for an APP for that to suit you I got the "number Pad KEYBOARD" aPP FROM ANDROID MARKET £1,64..AUTO INSTALLs THE APPS this phone does, so nice and easy. I love the way it lays out the text message, like a conversation your texts in grey box and theirs in yellow, so you can scroll up the conversations you've had with them recently which also shows the time

it has four screens when you slide ya finger side to side, for you to add your widgets and app short cuts to your own design. One screen has control to instantly turn on or off Wifi, GPS,Blue tooth and Air mode (for hospitals ,planes, anywhere that wants you to turn off all your outgoing and incoming transmitions but lets you use all other phones apps.)

battery life when using as normal phone is good I guess usual day to day and half, but as with any phone touch smart phone , yes it's a drinker..so keep eye on ya Wifi, gps being on. You can set it so if not in use it will deactivate...but as I expected I have to plug it in most nights.

It comes with charger lead that is usb then also has the plug head with usb socket on so you can plug it into mains. I found this VERY handy as already have a Cig lighter adaptor for car that takes USB (which are cheap to buy £3-£4?)

On Ebay ya can get the rubber surround silicone case £3.60 ish to give it Extra protection and it does not really make the phone more bulky. it's a very light phone. Camera quality is "ok" but would only use if did not have my compact or slr camera with me. Not that good in low light.. Camcorder mode is good. Removing rear cover to access SIM and Bat is NICE and easy, a slider catch switch and that's it, no nail breaking here!!!

you tube widget, instant link with youTube without browser, fast smooth!

I must say the hands free speaker and Mic is superb and if you in car and you mounted it close to you you will not need the car stereo hands free or if you do and it does not connect one day the built in speaker is LOUD and VERY clear!. it has a 3.5 inch stereo jack for earphones..the Talk to search mode works(somehow!!) I said to it a local Mbike firms name 2wheelers poole and it instantly jumped into goggle browser and found it within 3 seconds....

All in all it's a cracking phone, I never used to like Motos, but they have reprieved themselves VERY well

Very impressive

This is a seriously underrated piece of kit. When it has froyo installed it is right up there with the HTC Desire and the Iphone4.

Dislikes, styling is not for everyone, exposed screw heads, rubberised backing, and rubber flaps which mean it lacks the truly sleek appearance of an iphone.... but function over form here and those flaps keep the inputs waterproof and the rubberised coating means its going to bounce when you drop it instead of breaking. Especially when you see the footage of the person who puts the video camera on and drops it in a swimming pool so the phone records its entire journey to the bottom and being fished out again, excellent.

Loves, GPS is excellent, tried it extensively and it is very accurate.

Swype, Motorola's typing recognition system where you sweep your finger across the screen to write is incredibly intuitive, works extremely well and is genuinely a giant leap forward for input into mobile devices... although you do need to be able to spell properly, there is some leeway but if you use text speak then I can imagine this could be quite difficult to get used to.

Built in SatNav, again tested extensively and it is just as good as the Tom Tom satnav system I have used previously...would say I would replace the satnav with the phone it is that good

Music player and other media toys are very good, to the extent I would say that again I would now leave my ipod (Classic or new Nano) behind and use the music/media player on the phone.

Internet, very easy to set up connections and very fast connection/load speed. BBC Mobile site takes seconds and google searches are instant. Thoroughly impressed.

So overall, extremely good bit of kit, coupled with the ability to put in a 32gb SD card into it for not a lot of money, the purchase price at close to half of the HTC Desires and Iphone with functionality which matches them exactly and the knowledge that when you drop it or it gets wet it will keep working.

Best tech purchase I have made in years.

I had a go of someone else's Motorola defy and was convinced hat it is one of the best phones around. I was very pleased to buy this for the price on eBay. It was as new and unlocked which meant I just put in my 3-3G SIM and it was running. I find that it does everything the iphone does - I have no complaints with the iPhone, wonderful device - but this is cheaper, lighter and a little more robust. I don't make many phone calls, a few more texts but like it for email, reading online newspapers and news web sites (Sky, BBC for example). With the Android 2.2.upgrade (free) it has improved speed further. You can put a bigger micro SD card in, which I have. Battery life is very good, but all smart phones with full screens could be better eventually. A higher capacity battery is available for this and some suppliers sell an alternative back to accommodate a bigger battery. You can get a day out of it, and I have bought a couple of spares and a charger for £10, so power is never an issue.

I would recommend this phone, as it seems to balance a slightly larger than iphone screen, lightness, toughness, and functionality. Game players might prefer the iphone. It runs Quickoffice perfectly, and for the adult it has it all.

Motorola have produced a cracker with this. Well done.

One of the best smartphones out there

The Motorola Defy is a very impressive android phone, providing all the features you could wish for, packaged in a robust water resistant case, with a gorilla glass screen.

My previous smartphone was the HTC HD2, and although the HTC is supposed to be the better phone, in my opinion the Defy easily matches the quality of the HTC, with the added benefit of being much more robust. The weakness with all smartphones is the screen, and in both cases I have dropped these on to hard concrete. In the case of the HTC, it fell out of my pocket, fell 3ft and the screen shattered, however with the Defy it fell out of my overalls, slid down a roof, bounced off a wall then fell a further 8ft to the carpark below, resulting in only a slight scratch to the casing; the screen was unaffected!

Being an android V2.2 phone rather than windows or apple has advantages, and the web browsing experience is excellent - the phone can view flash, and I was able to watch both current news events and BBC iplayer programmes without any difficulty.

I have tried to think of anything that could be better, and I guess the only minor niggle is that emails are not automatically deleted once I have taken them off the server, although there is probably a setting to do this if I looked a bit harder! On the plus side, I have been able to send both Gmail and BTconnect emails without difficulty, which the HTC struggled with.

The Defy is an excellent smartphone, returning Motorola to the status of favoured supplier, and overall I would fully recommend this phone to anyone.

I bought this phone as I needed a robust, sturdy machine that would not didintegrate when it fell out of my pocket. I last used a Motorla in the 80's & loved it. I'd not used a smart phone before so I took sometime to get used to the Defy but now I am a fan. Very quick & relativley easy to use, with plenty of capacity for contact numbers although I found keying them in took quite a while as some of my contacts were previously on my old phone memory & not on the SIM card transferred to the Motorola. The keyboard is a tricky to use when keying in a message while out walking the dog (I keep tapping the wrong key!)and the battery lasts about 36 hours before needing charging even though I use the battery saving options. The camera is OK but not up to the quality of my old pocket digital Kodak. I bought a cheap gel casing as extra protection & yes, the phone has been dropped a few times & is still intact. It's definitely excellent value for money.
