The Nikon D800 is a fantastic camera which gives huge rewards for the careful photographer. The high resolution sensor allows the camera to capture more detail than any other DSLR ever and it shows in prints from 10 x 8 and above - simply stunning. The dynamic range and tonal range are exemplary. At this level the Nikon D800 and Canon 5D III major on different emphases in photography. I take mostly landscapes and people - for which the D800 is unequalled; the Canon shoots faster sequences and has less noise in low light (though downsampling the Nikon image size seems to equal Canon's noise performance). The truth is that cameras at this level are so good that they reveal the photographer's skill in composition, use of light and choosing the moment to take the picture. So you need to know yourself when considering whether to get this camera. The Nikon D800 is beautiful engineering in a practical form which with a good lens gives astonishing results. Some worry that a high resolution sensor needs extra care to draw the best from the camera - true - but it is just common sense (basically 'reduce shake when taking pictures') - the camera is not difficult to use. The Nikon D800 has given me unqualified pleasure and challenged me to raise my game - what more could one ask? Brilliant.

The most hyped camera of all time? Maybe not but certainly the most eagerly-awaited DSLR!

When a new camera comes the headlines are going to be all about the specs and the D800 has enough in that department to grab anyone's attention, they are, in the order that I as a professional photographer consider them important:

* A 36 megapixel FX sensor (available with low-pass sensor removed, see the D800E model)

* Full broadcast quality 1080p 30fps HD recording

* Expanded dynamic ranged over the D700

* New low ISO (50 equivalent)

* A host of creative options available in the camera, aiding workflow and in some cases meaning you skip PhotoShop and just export client-ready images from the camera.

It's no exaggeration to say that Nikon were caught short by the pre-order demand of the D800. Such that they increased the price by £200 during the pre-order period! Whether that was profiteering, shrewd marketing or simply a knee-jerk reaction to increased production costs, we'll never know but those who have a D800 right now (late May 2012) and paid the lower price of £2,400 should consider themselves very lucky.

Probably the most relevant question is: how does it stack up to the D700? Well, there's been a lot of information about this one, mostly from people who haven't even seen a D800, let alone used one professionally for any length of time. Let's just say that on low ISO it beats the D700 hands down, yes that's even if you're pixel-peeping and comparing a 12mp image with the D800's 36mp! On higher ISO (3200, 6400) if you zoom 1:1 you can see a few more speckles than the D700 but you that's obviously because there is 3 times as much image detail! In short, the D800 is a match in every department for the beloved D700 and a winner in most.
