Nikon Nikkor 70-300mm f/4-5.6G Lens

Created: 09/05/09
I bought this lens for my d40 knowing that it would NOT have auto focus facility and having had only minutes to be acquainted with the lens adjustments, found no dificulty at all in obtaining truly brilliant pics.
The various reviews available seem to dwell on the lenses slightly inappropriate qualitites, however, for one who takes real photos and using this as a extra lens to boldly go where few pieces of glass dare venture before,I can quite honesty say that the Nikon logo on the barrel gives me every confidence to attach to my camera and knowingly take pictures that i can be truly proud of.
At a around £80 which i paid for this lens, you should have gathered by now that i am totally wooed by this sexy assembly of aluminum and ground optics which is light, easy to use, looks a real serious piece of kit and best of all gives outstanding quality pictures.
If you are looking for a a long range lens with great all round performance combined with great value for money, i doubt there is any competition.

Nikon AF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 G Nikkor Lens

My girlfriend just got a new Dslr camera so I was just browsing for a fisheye lens when I saw this one up for just £70. A quick check on other sites showed that it was worth £200+ so no hesitation even if I don't know much about it. It's a shame it's not an auto focus but it's very good quality and she's already taken a few amazing shots with it. You can see them on deviantart.com. One of my best ebay purchase.

Great, if you know how to use it!

This lens seems to produce something in its images that more expensive lenses lack! The copy that I bought from an excellent eBay seller is sharp at all focal lengths wide open. The biggest mistake people will make with this lens is they will try to shoot at 1/100th at 300mm hand held and expect a sharp shot! That wont happen! Your shutter speed needs to be at least equal to or preferably higher than your selected focal length, stick to this and this lens is a winner! The best feature I think is the magnificent bokeh it produces, its just wonderful. That said, this lens, being cheap does lack the build quality of other Nikon's but if like me you paid £60 for it, you don't expect too much! The long and the short: Used properly this lens is awesome for the money, Very sharp at all focal lengths even wide open (well mine is anyway)! Recommended for sure!

Its good for the price

It really depends on what you want the lens for. It is really light so if your taking hand held shots at 300mm, the majority of them will be out of focus. It feels fragile so if you intend on using it all the time be careful.

I am only an amateur so this lens is perfect for me. I have a 28-200 VR lens in work and you can tell the difference in weight and quality, that lens is nearly 3 times the cost though!

I say get the lens, enjoy it for what it is. A very low cost 70-300mm lens that will make you think about shutter speeds and apertures.

I've only had the lens for 30 minutes (lol) but I recommend setting the aperture to F11 when zooming up to 300mm. I will carry on experimenting but for now, I'm really happy I bought it.

Nikon Nikkor 70-300mm f/4-5.6G Lens

Created: 16/10/09
After shopping around for upgrades for my D90 I wanted to step up from my 55-200mm lens to something with a bit more range. My other lens is an 18-105 so the 70-300mm covers the right scope of zoom.

It's a good looking lens, the AF is a little slow and very noisy as it doesn't have the silent wave servo the newer lenses have, but for the money... it's good. You do need a body which has it's own servo, or the AF will not work.

Basicaly what you get is the same optics as the newer DX-ED VR lenses but at a fraction of the cost. The VR function would come in handy and I recommend the use of a tripod over 200mm to eliminate blur from camera shake. It does require a lot of light but any 300mm lens under £2500 does. It's a good weight, fairly compact and robustly built.
