I am impressed! I have been a handheld consoles fan since they first came on the market many many years ago and have pretty much owned them all at some point or another. It is fair to say that this is, hands down, my favourite!

Most reviews go on and on about the 3D for obvious reasons - it is amazing to see and play. However, the 3DS has a few other really impressive play features that I just love.

First and foremost - the AR cards. Augmented reality. You point your DS at the card laying on the floor and it literally comes alive on your screen and allows you to play games. It is also compatible with other games and you can have characters from them appear (I have a nintendogs puppy that does the cutest things using the ar card).
The games you can play just using the built in DS camera are wicked too - Face raiders has you moving around the entire room shooting floating bubbles with your own face on it. I can't describe how much fun that game is - you'll be giggling like crazy.

There is loads of downloadable content some free some not but all fun!

I also love the streetpass function - if you put your 3DS into sleep mode and carry it around with you, it counts your steps and gives you credits to use on getting more ar card games but it also scans for other 3DS wherever you are walking and when it 'meets' another, it communicates and the owner's mii characters exchange gifts!

I really can't say enough good things about this console and I think it will be extremely hard to beat it in sheer multi functionality and fun!!!

I have actually had to buy another one because there was too much arguing in the house over one person having it too long, lol. You'll find once you start playing it you will be hooked and won't want to stop playing it!

Pretty Good

First off, the 3D is very cool and the fact that you don't need glasses to see it is ever cooler. And the games which come preloaded on the console are very fun. I have enjoyed hours of fun shooting my mum's face in my own living room! There is also a decent improvement in the games which are coming out specifically for the 3DS. I would say they are now probably equal in their graphics and gameplay to PSP games.
There are a couple of things which bug me about the 3D though. For example, the 3D is obviously going to look at it's best when it's on full, but for me I have to have it turned on about half way otherwise it's hard for me to hold my focus on the 3D and I see double. Also, you have to make sure your DS is positioned correctly in front of you because if it is slightly rotated away from your direct eye line, then the 3D just doesn't look right. Amother problem is the headaches I've had from having the 3D turned on for more than 15 minutes of gameplay.
I find (and I really thought I would be one of those people who wouldn't feel this way) that the Nintendo 3DS is better to use during gameplay with the 3D off because it is sometimes hard to see where you are and where you're going with the 3D turned on. You'd think it would make those sort of things easier but, sometimes, not the case.
The 3D is definitely a cool thing to have but I don't very often use it.
Other than the 3D, top widescreen and two preloaded games, there is nothing very much different about the 3DS from the DSi. In my opinion, if you already have a DSi, don't get a 3DS - unless you are dying to play a new game specifically for the 3DS or you are just a 3D fanatic. If, of course, you don't have a DSi then this will be a refreshing and exciting new experience for you.
To sum up, I really like it but there is a lot of room for improvement.

the only game system to incorporate full 3d without glasses! with its sleek design and metallic paint job from the first time you remove the package to a few days later when its resting on a table top you just want to admire and bask in its splender, with that said you'll probably see it on the table more often than not the reason for this being is after a hour stint of non stop playing your hands have clamped up and (especially with 3d on full) your eye's are a little sore. once you have recovered enough to fully appreciate the system though the scope of the gadgetry utilized is astounding from taking pictures in 3d using both the inner and outer lenses, playing face raiders with any area your standing in as your battle field to the full use of the internet browser and yet the magic still isn't gone as when your out and about with street pass activated your 3ds with connect to and receive software from other devices without both owners even knowing this took place, which lends it's self to possibilities such as pod casts and news reports being streamed to one device and then expanding explanatory through the whole populous, with ebook capabilities and skype being a possibility in the future this has got to be the top gadget for the next 3 years at least! gaming wise it's all about to kick off, ps3 and xbox take note as 3d is finally here and us gamers love it! full on action and a decent story line are both achievable as proved with this system immersing yourself completely in a game making all other tasks seam menial by comparison, simple controls add to the experience making game play seamless and enjoyable.
thanks for listening

After reading positive reviews myself from various sources and having seen the system advertised, I decided to make the plunge and pick one up myself.

The 3D effect is quite brilliant. Revolutionary almost, especially for a handheld console. It takes a while for your eyes to adjust, but after playing for a few days, this is not an issue.

Note it works better on certain titles than others. For example on games such as Street Fighter the 3D effect simply acts as a depth indicator, in other words it creates several layers of images, the characters are at the forefront while the environments scale further back. Games such as Splinter Cell and Rayman in my opinion utilise the system much better creating environments that you feel part of.

As for the controls, the one analog stick is concerning especially with games that rely upon use of the camera. However the four action buttons are used to move the camera, which yet again takes time to adjust to but doesn't create a problem. The touch-screen is flawless, neither too sensitive or not sensitive enough.

The choice of games at the moment isn't really spectacular but that is to be expected during the launch period. With titles such as Zelda and Resident Evil to look forward too it certainly is worth an investment.

Excellent product!

I wanted a 3DS from the moment I heard they were coming out and I knew if I waited a few months I'd be able to pick one up on ebay a bit cheaper. I am so happy I did buy this as it is great! So fun, really entertaining and that's before you even stick a game in!
A lot of people say the 3D effect can hurt your eyes but it doesn't affect me at all, as long as you keep it at the right angle and a good distance from your face it really is amazing.
I would definitely recommend one of these to anyone!
