Nintendo DS Lite
Created: 29/03/11
The NINTENDO DS LITE was Nintendo's best selling version of the DS.
Despite the release of the DSi model, the DS Lite (or DSL for short) is much more common amongst family households, due to the simple fact that so many people were not prepared to go out and purchase the newer DSi just for the added function of the camera over their existing model.
Therefore the DS Lite stands strong today, five years on from it's original introduction into the market.
If buying a 2nd hand unit, be aware of several factors:
1) Touch screens were common to failing if abused or jabbed hard with the stylus. They may appear to work but may be out of allignment and won't re-calibrate.
2) Hinges and hinge plastics had weak points, and were easily broken by children so look for cracks in the plastics before buying
3) The use of cheap imitation "game cards" used for playing multiple games from one cartridge often damaged the DS Lite's by blowing internal fuses F1 or F2 so many many DSL's have issues with not charging or powering on properly.
4) The DS Lite did not stand up well to being knocked or dropped. L2 and L4 inductors often break free from the circuit board inside, again causing problems with powering on and charging.
5) Cosmetic damage is common. The laquer used to coat certain coloured models often decays, becoming dry, crispy and brittle. The red models seemed to suffer from this the most. Examine corners and the top outside lid as this is where it can be most apparent.
All in all this is still a great portable console well suited to adults and children alike, and still ever popular in 2011.
Prices have remained stable and so it is easy to obtain a clean working model for £50 as it was over a year ago. Buy one, use it, enjoy it, sell it when your done - you won't loose out!

This Nintendo seemed v good package with the games, hard case etc.
Thought I had lost my [new] NINTENDO in transit from Spain - now found!
Console is as new, sold on some games, and am enjoying new ones. eBay really good for stuff like this.

Very good value for money, good selection of games and overall very good condition. Bought for my sister, and she really does enjoy the DS as it is different from the PSP as it responds to your voice aswell. Overall rating of the product: 8/10

Excellent choice for under 10's

The kids now have one of these each. One bought new and one used from eBay.
As a parent the plus points are good battery life, a reasonably rugged design and good reliability.
From the kids point of veiw the plus points are a huge variety of games for a range of prices, extra slot for gameboy advance games (cheap from eBay), can be easily and safely carried and easily chagred.
On the downside there a few common faults but these can usually be fixed using parts from eBay and some patience. Things to watch out for when buying a used one are:- worn charging sockets, broken screen hinges, cracked casings, scratched screens, broken/worn volume switches.
